I hope I'm not being incovenient by answering this
By my experience, the whitest white you can get painting with watercolors is by leaving that area clear. However, that is really difficult specially with small areas.
The method I use to highligh is (after the painting is dry, of course) to use acrylic paint in those areas. It'll stay sharp just like in the picture of this tutorial.
About the cheecks, have you tried using less water? When you add the color after the water is spreaded I know the color kind of leaks and might be hard to control. Also try not to move the brush around too much so the paint won't spread that much :3
I hope I helped and sorry for being an intruder

Thanks, this is indeed very helpful. I am trying more, and it feels like taming watercolours - they have a mind of their own, and I need to learn to both control it and play along with it.
I will try a touch of acrylic, as you say. And regarding the water, it is an ongoing struggle, I still try to understand how it should work. I will try less water, thanks!
PS And no problem about "intruding", I really appreciate a good advice!

A wonderful tutorial, don't know why I didn't see it before. I have just a few questions though.
Is there some kind of difference between frisket and masking fluid? Or is it the same thing? haha.
Also, is it possible to apply masking fluid onto already painted areas? Or would it ruin or distort the paint?
Sorry if these questions had been asked already, I couldn't seem to find them in the comments.

so the Frisket is to protect the subject from the background paints while they are applied and drying? Thank you for posting, it makes me want to try!

this is so helpful, I currently have no watercolor materials, but reading this tutorial kind of opens my eyes as to what I might have been doing wrong in past attempts, and I'm grateful for it Wish me luck~
I only ask, is watercolor paper an absolute must, or can I do well without it? x)

I was wondering how to prevent my paper from getting all bumpy and curled like. I spread the water before painting, but doesn't seem to be working. Help?

i have a question...i'm embaressed but here goes: what is that masking fluid? it looks sooooo helpfull but i never heard of this... ....
one of the reasons i stopped painting was because used to accidentaly cover areas of the drawing and that just pissed me off...but i would rally like to try again and this fluid looks like just what i need.... is it like a paste that just stopes the watercolor from spreading??

Kokako In reply to Azareea [2009-12-27 08:34:04 +0000 UTC]
its a sort of latex like fluid that you can buy at an art shop, it paints on with a brush and you rub it off at the end

This was extremely helpful, thank you for sharing how you work. I always admired watercolor and Im very new to it, just started playing around with it just last month, and I've got a looooot to learn, and then some. I just learned something new from your tut, and something I probably should have known to begin with: the laying water down first. I honestly didn't know, and I feel like the biggest dunce ever. Something tells me that little step is (or should be) common knowledge. -goes to hide-

wow! that is amazing!! the final copy and that! but one quick question.
for the little details in the horns(?) and the tiger, do you still continue to use water first??? or do you just get the brush and start painting?
i am actually a watercolorist... and i never heard of liquid fiskit(?).

Brilliant tut. And I don't think it's too wordy. I, personaly, think it could use some more words. It really helps if someone explains exactly what they're doing and why. C:
