Masking Fluid is the normal name for it...

...or Art Masking Fluid. The company "Winsor&Newton" have a very good one.

Rubber cement would actually work, as long as you don't leave it on too long. And its isn't to strong.

Very helpful! I have no idea what frisket is though...what is it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StruckByEros In reply to MoonlitBloo [2009-03-21 06:04:57 +0000 UTC]

Masking Fluid, is a liquid Latex, when it dries on paper it stays rubbery, so it can be painted around and on without paint getting where it is, and then with an eraser or even finger it can be removed so the lines are nice and clear.

Hendel-Shmendel In reply to ??? [2009-02-10 00:35:24 +0000 UTC]

Exactly what does the masking/frisket do? I don't doubt that it's probably important to the painting, I just don't understand its use.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StruckByEros In reply to Hendel-Shmendel [2009-03-21 06:08:58 +0000 UTC]

It is a liquid latex, it dries where applied, and then repels the paint. In essence it keeps it from the areas you apply it on. Making you able to paint the background easily and fast, or in this case with lots of water, without you accidentally getting a stroke of paint into the foreground area, or the colors running into the area you don't want it in. Does that help?

Thanks so much for this tut! Even though the steps are somewhat simple no-one ever showed them to me...

Your process is way easier and looks better than the one I was using.. (doing everything while it was wet.. lols)

waterdancer [2009-02-04 18:29:09 +0000 UTC]

when you spread water, do you worry if it gets spread on other part then the current one, or does allowing that cause bleeding into unwanted palces? also, how much water do you put down? puddles? a dripping brush? or just a moderately wet one? thanks! <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StruckByEros In reply to waterdancer [2009-03-21 06:10:34 +0000 UTC]

The masking fluid/frisket keeps the water/paint from flowing into unwanted areas.

As to the amount she uses, I can't answer that for you. I'm just a helper.

This is the most helpful tutorial I've ever seen yet! Maybe I might try it one of these days. *sigh* I miss painting. It's been months since I've last touched a brush. TT^TT Hey, maybe you could try a tutorial on anatomy or something like that. But it's up to you. Hope to see more of these from you.

This was really interesting to see how you work Does masking frisket smell as bad as masking fluid? If it does, I feel for your nose *pats head*
Beautiful painting by the way

Erk.... I'm staying away from that!

What is the difference between the two?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StruckByEros In reply to puppeteer-for-kings [2009-01-12 23:12:58 +0000 UTC]

I believe the ingredients are the only thing different.

Odd yes, but different formulas are often found around.

Uhmm...what paper do you use for watercolors? (:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StruckByEros In reply to AruaRose [2009-03-21 06:12:51 +0000 UTC]

Water color paper.

Haha a paper that is thick usually helps, cause it won't buckle when it gets wet, and get all wavy, then again you can tape your picture down to stop that from happening.
