It's funny how in the 30's and 40's Hilter refused to believe such a machine existed

A shame that diesel is in the front of the locomotive, but damn! I think this is the best shot of 3985 I've ever seen! Now personally I think they really need to get rid of that yellow monstrosity in the back, but.... Either way I'm loving the setting you captured here and how well it combines with the engine as a whole. Nice work!

thanks - yeah it was a shame, but at least i got to see them pull it out of the shop - and those UP guys i don't think are artsy fartsy type
you gotta work with what they give you !

Under her own power then? I see the smoke so that's what I'm assuming. Had to be quite a sight to see.

no - it was pulled out of the steam shop with a UPY (?) a small working diesel
that smoke was from the boiler - they had to keep it on - so it would be ready to run in the morning (?) someone there said it takes almost a day to get it up to steam ?

I like to think of the challenger as a younger brother of Big boy

3985's a 4-6-6-4, all Big Boys are 4-8-8-4's.

from what i was told by someone who was there that when they where in laramie, wy - april 2009 and was turning 3985 around on the "Y"
the water tanker derailed - nothing happened to the locomotive...but took over two years to repair.
do a google search and i'm sure you'll see something
here's a youtube video of it.....

Nice perspective. Really makes the front of the engine appear huge.

thanks, but it is huge !
and i was backed up against another train so i really couldn't get back any farther.....
it kinda sucked cause they had a UPY (a small working diesel locomotive) on the front of it when they pulled it out of the steam shop and then didn't unhitch it after - so i had what i had......and where it was is where it was.....
but the funny thing - it's been almost 3 years since this train ran (after it derailed in laramie) and it was suppose to make a test run to laramie and when something like this happens there is usually a shit load of people there. but i was the only one.....
it's suppose to make a run to denver sometime in october ? - i think it's the circus train ?
if it does i'm gonna catch it when it crosses the s platte river near greeley....
remember now this is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world.
