It's not running away. It's a tactical retreat thus leading the deathclaw into the minefield you set up beforehand.

I have a criticism. I have put hundreds of hours into FO3, 99% of that time spent with the most beautiful, loyal companion possible in a FO game...
And to put it simply.. Dogmeat has not only never run from a good scrap, but also.. Never lost one.
