I work at a photo studio doing the retouching, and I use the same basic technique that you do. However I do things a tad bit differently. I sample skin from the neck, because then no matter how much I retouch, you don't loose the texture of the skin. I also go through and remove all marks and uneven skin coloring. For that I use a large soft brush and very light pen pressure, because that will help prevent blotches.

I remember when I was new to manips... I used hours trying to look for tuts that dealt not just with one effect, but with several sides of manipulation. Glad I could save you some of that time Thanks alot for favving the whole thing

Thank you so much for taking the time commenting - I really appreciate such great feedback. I'm having several ideas for new tutorials, but unfortunately with school + job + senior year celebrations + the fact that I'm moving away from home soon and I have to clean my room equals little time with my beloved Photoshop.
Oh well... I'm glad you enjoyed the guide and thanks again

Heh - I'll rewrite that together with the two other effects that died with it
Unfortunately my Photoshop got deleted by my brother and I'm currently... er... trying to find an inexpensive way to retrieve it.
Thank you for the comments

You're welcome... and I could always need more muses Yes... I'll redo the frost section - perhaps as soon as the week after the next, when I got some days off from school. And it'll most probably include a mist and a fire effect section too, since I just found out it got lost with the frost *bangs head in table*

I just wanted to say that I'm learning a ton from your list of tutorials here, and that I appreciate your taking the time and energy into making them and making them as informative as you have done so. I hate asking anything of you, since you've really done so much already, but I really hope that you get the chance (and inclination) to go back and redo the part your computer ate, as I'd love to see how you did it. Please consider going back to it when you get the chance... thank you!

I'm glad you found it useful, and I appreciate the input very much. I decided to post the tutorial without because - frankly - I was mad as hell when I couldn't find it and I was just so tired I couldn't make myself sit down and do it all over. But I've had 6-7 people saying they'd like to see the lost section and it does give me more motivation for rewriting it.
I just found out yesterday that it wasn't only the frost effect that got lost, but also a mist and a fire effect. So yes... more things to come!

I really found it greatly useful, and I can't wait to see more from you. I hope that you get the necessary time for doing more of this, more *to* this, and that I get to see it when you're done. I'll keep an eye out... that's for sure!

I've written more tutorials, but unfortunately the dA rules prevents me from uploading the two I think would be of interest to the artists here. I might rewrite them too sometime
A slight bump in the road, though... my bro deleted my Photoshop to get space for his World of Warcraft - so it might take a while :curse:
Thank you so much for the kind comment.

More? Really? Is there another place that I can find/see them? If they are anything in the style of this one, so clear and illustrated, then I know I would be foolish not to seek them out so as to learn more from them. I would be most curious to see these two that you refer to, if possible.
*sigh* ahh yes, the pleasure of siblings, eh? I'm sure you could make way for new Photoshop, especially if you got rid of WoW.
You're more than welcome... I'm glad you didn't mind the comments of a stranger like mine.

You can find all of them at gamerenders.com/forum (username: Eil) and [link] (username: Red), but unfortunately the first requires registration and the latter's tutorial section is going through maintenance.
But here's the two I was talking about :
[link]
(click the Sticky topic "Massive Text Tutorial - 56k warning")
It deals specifically with typography in signature/banners, but some of it should apply to larger artwork as well.
Classic Movie poster tutorial:

And just a note... there are certainly room for improvement in both; I wrote the first last summer and the last only about a month after that - some of it I'd have rewritten or not included now. Oh well - still hope you can pick up a thing or two
And no... I don't mind your comments at all - quite the opposite

It's sort of clichΓ© to just say things like, "oh God, you're awesome!" or "you totally rule!" but you'll have to forgive me, because you really are amazing. And not just because of how much you share, or what you're sharing, or anything like that, it's not limited to just one aspect of the whole thing, but in fact, the whole thing itself. That's why you're awesome. Because you just are, and I said so!
Thanks for the two new tutorial links. I can appreciate the disclaimer about having room for potential improvements on them, but it's really not necessary. Your tutorials are clear and concise in a way that is motivating and educational, and to be honest, one of the things about Photoshop I like is, when you reach a certain stage, you're more or less free to make up your own paths from there on out. Your tutorials really help in getting a person to that stage without branding them with a "this way or die" kind of attitude. That's also why you rule!
I curse you though -- in the most playful of ways, of course -- because you've now given me several hours of reading and homework that I want to takcle right away, but I can't because of other things that must be done first!
But I'll get to it as fast as I can, and then I'll be hungry for more from you! So with luck, you'll keep feeding me!

Aww... I think I'm gonna save this comment and look at it everytime my self-esteem needs a boost
I think we have somewhat the same views on tutorials When Istarted with Photoshop I was pretty much dependant on tutorials to even find where the clone tool was, and sometimes I had to quit in the middle of a piece because I couldn't figure out what the tutorial was saying (or because I couldn't find said tool
). And then there are the tutorials that actually teaches me how to use something, and apply it in different ways, and not only copy the steps for the particular piece I'm making at the moment. More guides than tutorials, really.
What I know about Photoshop and manipulating comes from messing about, and from other artists that has taken the time to write their own tutorials and give me their advice (sometimes after I've pestered them for a bit ). I'm glad I can help others the same way
Homework, eh? Can I give you grades?
I think this will be my last guide for a good long while. I'm off to college next year, and before that I've got a pile of exams, tests and projects to survive. But I do have an idea of what I'll write about next - if only for fun.

Venasque In reply to Eilorendil [2007-02-27 12:45:20 +0000 UTC]
Sure, you can give me grades, so long as they're all A's!
I think we have the same take on tutorials, too. That's a good thing. Sometimes I try to talk to other deviants who've done a particular thing in their work that I like, and I try to find out how it was done, but in such a way that tries to make sure that artist knows I'm not trying to just copy their style, but rather apply it to how I use Photoshop in my own ways. Sometimes that works, and other times... well, not so much.
I would love to have found tutorials like yours on things that I still suck with in Photoshop, like layer masks and their manipulation effects.
So wait -- when you say this will be your last guide for a long time, does that mean you'll not catch up and fill in the parts that were deleted by your computer before heading off to school? Say it ain't so!

They'll be filled in, eventually I thought I might be able to do it this week, but because of aforementioned problems with Photoshop I wasn't able to. I'll see if I can do it around - eh - Easter
I doubt my teachers will give me any reprieve before that.*sighs* Final year in high school and all, you'd have thought they give you a break, but it's quite the opposite.

The end of the semester for me was very busy, too... so I'm just now getting in here fully again, and just in time, I see. Thanks for this heads up -- I'm excited to look through the new additions, and I see you mentioned doing even more soon enough! I can't wait to see all the more lessons from you!!
