Disclaimer: This rant/tutorial thing (?????) is mostly opinion. I feel like there needs to be a distinction between backdrops and proper environments, and I think calling any environment a "background" is limiting.

Throwing down an abstract pattern behind a character isn't what a background should be, but people commonly use the word "background" to describe that. It's technically correct, too. it's the "back ground" of a character.

The word "environment" implies something much better, that the characters are living/interacting in that space. I think even a shift of words will help get you into a better mindset when trying to draw these. Personally it's helped me greatly, the idea first being presented to me in I think it was Scott McCloud's "Making comics" I read when I was a kid.

I am of course not going to dictate how other people use their words, and I myself use "background" and "environment" interchangeably when talking to people, this is more to demonstrate a point.

Please consider lighting, how your character occupies the space, how they feel about the place they're in and how they interact with that space and others in it. These things are all very important and shouldn't be though of at the end of a drawing.
