In the Japanese version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Vivian was biologically male. That is explicitly stated in Vivian's character description, which is roughly translated as "One of the shadow group, Vivian appears to be a girl but is really a boy." Additionally, Goombella's Tattle reads: "That's Vivian. Of the shadow group, she's the youngest sister... er, brother."[1]
While Beldam uses the term "majotachi" (meaning a group of sorceresses) to refer to her, Marilyn and Vivian as a collective, she also calls Vivian "Man" (as an insult). Female pronouns such as "her" and "she" are used when referring to Vivian, though this may be because it is considered proper to refer to transgendered persons by the gender they identify themselves with.[2] Vivian has also been described as a bishounen - a male possessing feminine characteristics. In The Thousand-Year Door, several characters actually mistake Vivian for a girl because of her effeminate appearance.
Since Vivian kisses Mario in one scene, the North American version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was censored and Vivian was changed to a female character.[citation needed] All instances where attention was drawn to Vivian's gender were also removed, such as replacing Beldam's "Man" insults with "Plug-Ugly" in the English versions. The Australian version retained these changes, though some translations in the PAL region (such as the Spanish version) maintained the Japanese plot and portrayed Vivian as a male who wished to be female.

some claim that in other version Vivian is a guy, but it also counters them. They say that Vivian was called a man by Beldam:

However, since Vivian has an inferiority complex, of course she wouldn't argue back.
Mario writes in his journal that Vivian is a "he" so everyone jumped the gun and believed him.
However that journal entry happens after Beldam calls Vivian a guy infront of Mario...
And let's face it, everything that Beldam says at Vivian is an insult so it shouldn't have been taken at face value to begin with.

I don't like the normal look for Mario very much, except for Paper Mario which is very cute. It's always fun to see him drawn differently, in fan artworks.

Whoa Aichiwawa look at what you have done to vivian she is just looking quite freaking volumptious in an way that all the fans of the series would swoon to her very looks... because she's an real bute the way you have made her as to curves and all very complimentery to some of stuff in the game actually.
I wish that TTYD was still selling copies as players I have missed my chance to get to them while Gamecube still had some life left since I was really an playstation 2wer for like an since 2002 until I got my wii.I used to think mario was the kickasser Console was back in the 90's, I really forgetten how awesome of the games from nintendo were unique from any other.
I honestly almost forgetten how kickass the first of the series was back in the last days of N64 when I've gotten an copy of super Paper mario. To me's it has to be like one of the most quirkiest and man just quite an break from typical genre of fantasy and scifi altogether. I would've recommend this and Earthbound for such try's for veriety.
I Also Have gotten Mario galaxy aswell but I have still never played it yet.

Ah yah, I like the Mario RPGs because they are so quirky, too! The supporting characters are very likeable. Earthbound was another game that was weird but extremely memorable and fun, too. I still have my SNES copy of that game. Nintendo's almost always ahead of every other game developer in terms of taking a strange concept and then making it revolutionary and fun.
Like the Wii with its Wiimote, for example.
