Description
If you watch me, no doubt you have noticed that I've been submitting a lot of these Mini Planet images. What can I say? They're fun to doAnyway, I thought I would make a tutorial on how I do them. I link to a website tutorial on all of the Mini Planet shots that I do, but I still get people asking me how to do it
I thought about submitting this into the dA video format, but since the video size there is pretty damn small and the max length can be no longer than 20 minutes, I decided to upload a normal Flash video.
This is how I did my latest Mini Planet, Mini Planet - House . I shot this over and over, and while I liked some of the later ones I did, the video got sort of messed up and so I used this one, which was the first one I did. The original video size was 1024x600 pixels, but I had to squish it down a bit to make the file size something reasonable.
And if you're wondering, yes I shot this with CamStudio, but that program had some issues making a Flash file out of the longish video. So I downloaded a trial of Camtasia Studio and used that program just to turn my .avi file into a .swf file
I should point out that for some reason, CamStudio ignored what my mouse cursor was really doing, so it's always the default pointer. So some of the tools I used don't have the Photoshop cursors. I also forgot to mention that when you apply the Polar Coordinates filter to the panoramic, you get a somewhat noticeable seam that goes from the center out to the edge where the left and right side of the panoramic were. So you'll have to do some cloning/healing/whatever to make that blend well.
Anyway, I hope you like this

It's a good start
Next time, I would pay close attention to where you put your camera. Where you place your camera is where the center of the planet will be, and that goes a long way to how it looks.

Yeah, get a good place to set your tripod up, and you're half way there Then there can also be problems with trees and things if they're close to the lens. You end up having to do a lot of adjustments to get it all to blend well.

My program of choice is CamStudio [link]
Although I had to convert the .avi file CamStudio made with a trial of Camtasia Studio, a pay-for program that does the same sort of thing, just to spit out the Flash file here

You should definitely give it a try. You may not do so well, but after a few tries, you'll get the hang of it

Yeah, I saw how it was done and I thought, "REALLY? THAT'S EASY!!!" but I probably will have to give it a few tries to get it right (especially with the camera work). It's just amazing how something so amazing was done in so few of steps though.

Yeah the actual process isn't too hard, it's just the detail work that's hard. Like making sure there's no abrupt breaks between each picture, and the meeting spot between the far left and right side of the pan before you wrap it around.
I'd just be sure to get all the proper shots of what you're shooting (making sure there's no gaps, and go high and low enough). From there, it's just a matter of fixing where the camera tripod legs are in the shot, and then fixing up any odd gaps or misalignment's.

Question....did you ever try doing this with a miniature model city or landscape? If so how well did it turn out?

Nope, never tried that. I always shoot out in real locations. Could be interesting though.

You should definitely try it out It's pretty fun, and you learn a lot about how to fix and align things so the planet looks right in Photoshop.

but you used a tripod to shoot the pics? rigth?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
electricjonny In reply to OlexD [2010-06-29 17:46:07 +0000 UTC]
Yup, you sort of need a tripod to do these, since you need to make sure to get photos of all the area (360 degrees horizontal, and around 90 degrees vertical), and a tripod makes sure that the photos will stitch together properly.

OlexD In reply to electricjonny [2010-06-29 17:49:56 +0000 UTC]
yeah, hehe but you just "bend" the tripod, you dont lower it?

electricjonny In reply to OlexD [2010-06-29 17:55:38 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I swivel it around to shoot horizontally, then bend it up and down to get the vertical.

OMG! That's amazing! I never knew Deviant Art did video? How did you do that?
I really mean, that's an amazing tutorial. Cool mini planets. Wonder if a "mini planet filter" will be the next big thing on cameras and photoshop?

electricjonny In reply to Techy-Ben [2010-02-15 22:47:52 +0000 UTC]
Haha, well this is just a Flash video, so everyone can do that. But then there's official videos that can be uploaded, but you need to apply to be able to submit those. I have the privs to upload video, but the video size is so small that I prefer to upload Flash videos.
And , It would be rather hard to have a Photoshop filter that did all this

Techy-Ben In reply to electricjonny [2010-02-15 23:10:21 +0000 UTC]
They do now sell 360 degree cameras now though. It would help speed it up.
But your way is the best. Even if it gives you 3GB images!
You have a lot more control when you stitch the image together yourself. You can also rearrange it if you want your planet to have 2 houses, or no trees or whatever.

This is very intresting I think GIMP can do this too, I'll have to click around and find a few of the tools though (gimp's tools are slightly different)

electricjonny In reply to Aimee-Lesley-Sim [2009-07-20 10:36:44 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, as long as there's a Polar Coordinates filter, it should be easy to do. I think I remember googling this and there's no filter built in by default, but I saw a link somewhere that offered the same filter that you could install into The GIMP.

Oh okay then.
Also what is the big difference to gimp and photoshop?
The big difference is that Gimp is free and to me does just as much as photoshop (well it suits me for a rookie ) thanks bye x

Haha, well there's a number of differences.
For me, Photoshop supports LAB color mode, so that's mainly why I like it.
