Description
This is an idea I've had for a while, and I decided to flesh it out and make it a visual suggestion here.If you can't tell by looking at it, it's a suggestion to have a history of the updates we make to our deviations. At the top you'll be able to select previous versions of things, and at the bottom you can select whether or not to add any deviation updates to the history whenever you edit a deviation (the checkbox is at the bottom of the other checkboxes).
So you'll be able to see how things progress over time, if and when a deviant chooses to update a deviation. By default you'll see the Latest version when you click a deviation, but you can then choose to see the Original version, or versions in between.
The tabs at the top might not be the best way to do it, but it was just what I came up with.
Any ideas or comments about this are more than welcome

Great critique
I think you nailed it when you asked about deleting past versions and all the prints stuff. There's definitely a few details I never thought about. I may refine this idea (based on all the feedback I've gotten) and submit something new based on this idea.
It would also be interesting to use this for, like you said, tutorials. Those can be really big images, and having a way to include "chapters" would be very useful to a lot of people, I think.
Anyway, thanks so much for the critique

Impact
The full-impact of this idea didn't resonate with me until I started reading some of the comments, it was then I realized how useful a feature like this could be. The first group of people I imagine could benefit from this are digital artist. I've seen a few galleries where artist post line-art, then perhaps a rough coloring job, and finally a finished piece.
Being able to simply click through different versions of the same piece of work could be very beneficial to both the artist and those viewing the image. The quality of the feedback they receive could potentially increase as people may ask more questions about how the artist was able to go from one version to the next.
This could also be great for the literature community. Sometimes you may have a rough idea or concept you are working on, but not a completely polished piece. A feature like this may also inspire more discussion about a certain deviation as well.
Giving the user control of whether or not to add an update to the version history is definitely key, as you wouldn't want it to become like Wikipedia where every revision is listed in the history.
This is a great idea for a feature, and it isn't something too far-fetched either. It would take a bit of work, but from the mock-up you presented it seems like this would fit seamlessly into the submission process for new deviations.

Thank you for the critique
I think you saw just what I was thinking here It's not something that's too critical to this site, but it would definitely generate discussion on how people create art, and that's a good thing since it can teach people about how we all go about creating things.

You're welcome. Thanks for thinking of such a cool idea.
Generating discussion about art is definitely what this site needs more of. It is definitely the focus of the site, though sometimes drama and other silly things tend to get in the way of that.

Yeah, more discussion about art is always good
That's the main reason why I hate that Critiques are subscriber-only.

Thanks!
Yeah it seems a lot of people would want this, and it would be pretty handy for a lot of different art types.

Yep. It would be pretty handy for me and other deviants could see how the picture improved throughout its time. Really good idea

For a few moments I was thinking of changing the Edit Deviation page with a new add-in on the Submit Deviation page, but then it escaped me how that would work.

Okay, I -finally- just finished the first of the three images for the update of this idea.
(The third image is the Version Manager page that I'm going to make.)

Well, there's a small problem with this one. Sometimes, a user updates a deviation because the previous version had something in it that the user didn't want you to see (such as a first and last name--I know that this happened to me once x.x). And I don't see any way for previous versions to be removed from version history.
Also, if this gets implemented, there will be users wanting to either add previous versions of an image to the version history (but not at the front as the latest version) or combine multiple deviations that are all really multiple versions of the same image. There needs to be some way to do those things.
If you would like, I could update this suggestion to version seven of deviantART and send you a pair of images: One with my suggestions added in and one without. I would send the images to you by e-mail so that you could upload them as your own deviations. (But if you take the one with my ideas, please credit me for them )

I love this idea, but I think it could be improved even further with the use of a drop-down menu as opposed to tabs. I'm not the best artist, but I often update at least 7-8 times...and that many tabs would quickly become cumbersome in my opinion.

electricjonny In reply to Cursed-Blessings [2009-11-05 03:49:09 +0000 UTC]
Hehe yeah, I was never too happy with the tabs at the top. Getting a dropdown menu or something would probably be better

Cursed-Blessings In reply to electricjonny [2009-11-05 03:55:47 +0000 UTC]
It would probably also save on page loading time, now that I think about it, seeing as the tabs would technically have to be graphics...
...now I'm anxious to see if deviantART will ever implement this feature. I would love to see the day...and consolidate all of my WIPs that right now are floating about uselessly either here or on my hard drive.

Yeah, I really hope they add something like this
It would be great for just about everyone, since we could easily see how we improve our art, and other people could see how the art advanced.

Me too, and I agree that it would...I've seen a lot of people reposting with links to the original art, this would simplify things by so much...
Thank you for posting such a wonderful suggestion.

This would definitely come in handy for me, I tend to update my emoticons all the time. Some of them have gone through drastic changes over the years, and I sometimes wish I had submitted some of the updates as new deviations instead so others could see how much I've improved. Version History would allow us to keep our galleries in top notch condition, while still keeping the history of where we started out

This would be great for me as a writer, as I'm currently scrapping old versions of a story and then cross-linking all the versions in the artist's comments (which is a pain & a hassle, especially since dA won't allow two deviations with the same name...)
