While I love the Webber musical, Leroux' phantom is the Phantom. So he deserves some fanart. Leroux I mean. And his Phantom. And the rest of the lot in the book. Which reminds me - I really should draw Raoul too. Don't know why I haven't gotten around to it yet, seeing how I actually like his character very much (don't punjab me me, Raoul-haters, I know you're out there- and I know that you're plentiful!) And the Daroga. The Daroga is one big epic win.Oh God, my descriptions... aren't getting better, are they?
Nope.
There's a reason I study literature insted of writing it myself.

Book Raoul really isn't a bad guy. Raoul isn't really a bad guy in most versions, to be honest. He's a brave, sensitive young man who loves Christine and while he worries about her when she disappears, he isn't overbearing as I've heard him called. I respect Leroux-Christine a lot more than I do other versions, too. He mostly gets his bad rap from the ALW musical, and even then it's primarily because he's Erik's rival.

Yeah, I know. Raoul is basically hated for not being Erik - and for getting the girl. But when you look at it, he's not a bad guy, not at all. Sure, Leroux pokes fun at him sometimes, but he tends to do that with almost all his characters.Come to think of it, one of the great thing about Leroux story is that you can actually sympathise with all the characters. There is no real villain in the story.

So true! Even La Carlotta is sympathetic when you look at it. They aren't good guys or bad guys, they're all people.

I think he becomes angry when colored because its either the shading, or he isn't fond of himself rendered when he's not in the shadows - I mean - his IS the Phantom. But you're right - and the ball point makes him look sadder. I wouldn't say the first pic is completely disney-esque - I don't always attribute happy people to Disney - just that sometimes, even tragic chars deserve to be happy sometimes. Law of averages sort of thing.

Did you read Kay's novel 'Phantom'? He has a large feature in that! If so, what did you think about him in that book, and the book in general~?

I've only had the opportunity to read a few chapters and random excerpts so far, mainly from Erik's childhood (which I really liked, b.t.w. Well, "like" seems like the wrong word to use, because it's so painfully SAD, but... ). I plan on buying the whole thing soon!
Unfortunately, a friend of mine's read it and never, seemingly, understood the concept of "spoilers". "You should read Phantom. Oh, you've read some of it already? Did you read the part about Luciana? Don't get your hopes up, 'casuse she dies. And it's Eriks fault. Atleast Erik thinks it's his fault. And everything goes downhill from there. And by the way, Christine ends up having Erik's baby."
And so on. Kinda... killed the suspense.
I take it you've read it. Do you reccomend it?

Anyway, yes, I would recommend it for anyone who's into POTO!
I'll not give you any more spoilers, but I will say that the first 3/4 of the book is amazing! However, the last 1/4 is, to me, very much of a let down and disappointment.
I'd say more but I'd like for you to read it first and then share your opinions with me! ;D
