Description
Here's my setup for a scene in The Adventures of Captain Atom where a fire breaks out in the laboratory after the villainous Doctor Zhihivago is pushed into a malfunctioning relay (the thing in the center with all the antennae and levers on it). The scene called for a lot of flame pieces, so I had a container of all the flame pieces I owned nearby for whenever I needed to add more flames to the fire or take some off of the set. I had to turn each flame piece individually to make it look like the flames were swirling so it was a very time consuming scene.

I also had to create explosion effects in camera for some shots as I didn't have the means to do digital effects at the time. I would create large rings of fire from flame pieces and sticky tack, attach them to the machinery that was exploding, and shine a flexible reading light (seen in the background) to simulate a flash of light. I did something similar with blue electricity pieces to simulate the devices shooting out electric sparks and electrocuting Doctor Zhihivago (And yes, his name is based on the famous novel and movie Doctor Zhivago)
