I thought this was a photo of a model, not a 3D model.

Thank you very much. I am working really hard to get better and these early pieces give me hope that I may be as good enough to really make something of it sometime.

I think you're well on your way. Keep asking for the help of others, that's where the real ideas come from.

Good stuff as always Goliath, the first guy is right though. When you are focusing on a model. softer shadows are the best way to go. This Ambient Occlusion is interesting. I have looked at this before. All good stuff. "keep practicing"-Michaelangelo-ninja turtles 2.

Hehe, for my next project I will remember all that. I am also going to leap into ZBrush. I am already watching the tutorials.

Thank you! It is my first project so a lot has been left out but my next ones will have much more content. I modeled this in Maya 2011 and rendered it in VRay.

Dude, that is fantastic for your first vehicle. You might want to look up some tutorials for lighting though. Usually you want to have a soft light on a model you have as a display piece. 3 point lighting is my personal preference, though I'm sure there's an easier way of creating soft light in VRay since that's what your using. I only mention this because the harsh lighting you have is hurting the look of your model. Oh, and look up how to make an Ambient Occlusion pass of the model, it brings out all the details of your models. I'd get rid of the plane you have under the pedestal the mech is on too, or at least rotate it so you can't see the corner. Besides that though, it looks great.

Haha, great ideas, thanks! I am going to start work on a couple other projects but I will use your advice for the next ones for sure. With VRay I used one light which is the Sun function which I could tone down and hide the sun itself from the reflection which I should have done. I am looking up Ambient Occlusion as we speak. And the ground was last minute so I'll work on that next time. It's awesome to finally have someone to talk to about this stuff. My next 3 projects are going to be a dragon, a paladin, and a paladin style mech. I'll probably be asking you some things in the process.

Your welcome. I'm just about done with my bachelors in the same type of program your in. My prof was ALWAYS critical about lighting of models, to the point where he would knock us down a letter grad if we didn't light our models. So it's kind of drilled into my head now. Sounds like your going to have fun working on those projects. Well, unless Maya decides to have a brain hemorrhage while your working in it. But yeah, feel free to ask me stuff. If I don't know it, I'll probably be able to look it up.
