Description **EDIT** Per the suggestion of I added a little more detail in the clouds and made it more fiery to fit the Biblical description. I used reference from these photos [link] The strange phenomena that occurs when a volcano eruption generates an electrical storm. That took a few more hours of painting and now I think this piece is complete.

I just finished this painting this morning. Well, it might still need a little touching up here and there. I recently read through the book of Ezekiel and the descriptions in it are crazy! My imagination still needs a little work, lol! But I really wanted to illustrate some of the amazing things that Ezekiel described.

This is the text that inspired this painting:Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the River Chebar, that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. On the fifth day of the month, which was]in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity, the word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the River Chebar; and the hand of the LORD was upon him there.

Then I looked, and behold, a whirlwind was coming out of the north, a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire. Also from within it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man. Each one had four faces, and each one had four wings. Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the soles of calves' feet. They sparkled like the color of burnished bronze. The hands of a man were under their wings on their four sides; and each of the four had faces and wings. Their wings touched one another. The creatures did not turn when they went, but each one went straight forward. As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man; each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle. Thus were their faces. Their wings stretched upward; two wings of each one touched one another, and two covered their bodies. And each one went straight forward; they went wherever the spirit wanted to go, and they did not turn when they went. As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches going back and forth among the living creatures. The fire was bright, and out of the fire went lightning.
~ Ezekiel 1:1-13

Just for the sake of being authentic, as inspiration I used a photo of a canal from the Euphrates river. I did a little research and learned that the "River Chebar" was actually a canal from the Euphrates. I used some various images found on the internet as inspiration for the water and clouds. My lightning inspiration came from
And I was also very inspired by the style of

This painting was very difficult as I did not have an exact image to use as reference, I had to kind of figure things out as I went along. I had so much fun painting this, and I'm planning on doing many more pieces of art relating to Ezekiel's visions and the 4 living creatures.

Acrylic on 16x20 canvas board. Approximately 17 hours.

**Edit** Thank you to everyone who this piece. I can't send a personal note to all of you, but I wish I could. I am flattered that you like my art.

Really love what you did with this piece to "render" his vision artistically, I really want to do an image of the seraphim or a creature representing it as described in Isaiah but I just haven't had any break-through concepts come to mind on how to portray it. The sky here reminds me of the description of Moses' ascension of Mt. Sinai.... this is spectacular.

Sounds like fun! You should totally do it! Pray and see if God gives you some inspiration. Just think of it as if you were creating an epic movie, how would it look?

Sometimes I just start drawing ideas. Then as I am drawing a new idea comes to mind that was even cooler than what I first thought of. Just some suggestions. If you do anything I would love to see it!

Wow.... The only thing I could think to do if I saw this before me would be to sink to my knees in submission and worship. This is a wonderful depiction; truly awe inspiring and God is indeed felt through it.

All I can think of in my heart is, "I'm not worthy!"

Sorry it's scary! It was intended to be awe inspiring, not frightening.

I suppose that there would be some element of fear though. God is so big and powerful, and the creatures that are in heaven with Him are so majestic that they would blow your mind...so naturally if you were to see one of them I'm sure there would be some element of aww and fear in your mind.

Thanks for commenting.

I mean, yeah. It's awe inspiring too. But as you said... just imagine judgement. I mean, the Bible talks about those who are being judged wanting the mountains to fall and crush them so that they won't have to see the wrath of the lamb. I mean, that's scary stuff. But I mean, I'm okay. =] I've devoted my life to the lamb and believe wholeheartedly that his blood alone saves me from my sins. It just really pushes me to go out and share. I don't want ANY of my friends to see Jesus coming in his glory and wrath and NOT be on the right team. Ya know?

I know exactly what you mean. Jesus taught more about Hell than He taught about Heaven. I think it is because it is more effective to take that approach - to make people aware of the punishment so that they will want to do what they can to avoid it.

Like it says in Jude 1:22-23:And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.

Yes, this is an acrylic painting on canvas board. I did some research to figure out how I wanted it to look, then I found photos that I could use as reference and pieced them together in my head, then I painted it.

The Cherubim, clothed in sacred fire
transformed in form and pattern and hue,
melting with ethereal cloud
to rearrange their shape anew.

Two wings, then four, then six and eight
they spun in waves of shimmering flight
then suddenly changed before our eyes
to glacial orbs of glimmering light.

The wheels congealed, to fuse as one
they burst in countless shards of fire,
changing again, the flames became
a thousand wings to speed them higher.

These spirits fled through pregnant space
spinning Saturns icey rings, then
merged mosaic star lite lace
drinking light on thundered wings

from beauty to beauty the cherub unfolded
unveiling their splendour, diffusing love,
spilling out forever in life everlasting
exuding the grandeur of secrets above.

Great lightening wings, dipped red with thunder
flashed accross ambrosial skies,
in the midst of gyroscopic wheels
four faces appeared with countless eyes!

So then in far fung radiance
they stirred up clouds of perfumed air
and leaping from a rainbowed arch
they landed burnished wings aflare!

"Stand fast intruder! Advance no more,
thy name as yet, cannot be found
for in life's book it must be written
if thou should'st dwell 'pon holy ground!

That is beautiful. Did you write it?

Chyme12 In reply to Emberblue [2011-10-29 08:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, yes, I did write it, I believe, under inspiration from the Spirit of Truth.

It is only a very small extract from an epic poem I have called , 'The Angel with one wing'.

It is allegorical and I see it as a relevant to the times, Christian oddysey. A contempory Dante's Inferno or Pilgrims Progress if you will. It incorporates such themes as Robots and artificial intelligence too! In it is a wonderful discourse between the angel and Darwin, who has now assumed the shape of a giant ape!
You are taken on a journey into the past and then into the future (as portrayed in the Bible). You descend into the realms of the Dragon's lair and witness his evil plan for the world. (New World Order).
Escaping the abode of darkness, you are transported into the Heavenly realms, where I attempt to describe (as with the Cherubim) all the wonders of our God and His golden city!
So, if you are in contact with a reliable Christian publisher, and could put me in touch, I would be grateful.
It is all in rhyming verse and around 20,000 words long, about the size of a childrens novel.
Here in the UK, it is now very difficult to get Christian literature published and especially, poetry.
I believe this would make a tremendous impact upon the young and would make an inspiring animation. It is innovative and exciting, enough to capture the imagination of the lost, that they may see and understand the true majesty of who Jesus really is!
