Description
This is a chalk drawing I completed yesterday. It was part of an annual "Street Painting Festival" that my city does. In front of City Hall they assign spaces on the asphalt to artists that have applied, and we spend 3 days completing our artwork. I wanted to draw something that was significant to me personally and would impact others as well. I came across this painting by Youngsung Kim called "The Hand of God" www.goodsalt.com/search/yongsu… taemen.co.kr/ and felt so inspired. After much prayer and deliberating over other images I felt like God was telling me to draw this one. What I enjoyed most about my time there was listening to the conversations of the people walking by as they discussed with each other what they thought I was drawing. Some people thought it was Jesus surfing. Some thought it was God reaching down from heaven. As the details progressed it became more obvious to people that it was Jesus reaching in the water. I heard, "Look, it's God reaching for you!" and "Who is that?" and some people hit the nail on the head with,"OH! It's Jesus walking on the water reaching down to save Peter!". I wanted to communicate to people that Jesus is reaching out, willing to save them.
This is the Biblical text that the painting is illustrating:
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:22-33
10' x 12' chalk and water, on asphalt.

Thanks! I agree, this is a unique perspective. I can't take credit for it, it was inspired by another artist who did the original.

Thank you friend. I feel like I could have done better if I had planned better...the hand needed more detail, but I ran out of time. But I'm glad that people were blessed by looking at it. Thank you so much for your encouragement!

Hm, well, noticing the effect of water that doesn't affect the hand directly, yes, could be. But it's still underwater. I try to imagine how do I look up being underwater and it looks good to me!
Maybe my eye doesn't reach (yet) that advanced point of view And of course, what you say about time. XD
Anyway! Everything we do for our Lord, with love, He does recieve it with pleasure!
You're very welcome!

I cant fathom rolling around on hot asphalt trying not to smudge anything while doing this. Good job!

Who said I didn't smudge anything? "Rolling around" is true, I used my husbands "mechanic chair" so I could sit and roll about...but that didn't prevent me from walking on it once in a while. Fortunately the photo is far away enough to hide the footprints.
A few cities over, they are holding another one of these events next month. Not sure what I want to draw yet.

Aww, thanks! Up close the drawing doesn't look very good, but far away everything blends together and it looks better. I really liked the perspective of this (the original painting I found) so I thought it would be fun to draw it.
