That's great!! So I'm assuming you sketch it out on paper first, scan it in, then go over it with the pen tool? I'm only asking because I used to do graphic design several years ago and I'm trying to get back into it, but I have absolutely no idea how to use illustrator

That is one way to do it. But usually I use the other tools in Illustrator, especially for geometric icons. I use the tool for creating squares, circles, ovals, and various line tools. For the more free-flowing shapes I use the pen tool. But that is for icons only...for the "hand lettering" I do exactly what you said, I use a pencil and paper first then scan and use the pen tool...or sometimes I use the "live trace" option because it is quicker but it produces a less accurate result.
There are plenty of free online tutorials if you feel like learning Illustrator again.
