Oh no, my scanner made it look so scratchy and unclean! I retried it with no improvement and my phone takes horrible pictures. But I still love the character and am submitting him anyway damnit!

This started out as just a random jester character for RykitsuChu’s contest. rykitsuchu.deviantart.com/jour… In the first attempt drawing him, I wanted to give him an anime feel, with the emo bang and black “kimono” sleeves combined with the classical jester look. But as I drew him, I felt him come to life and demanding a back story--and more outfits. He is sassy, cunning, and delightfully diabolical. When I drew him next, I was more inspired by the sleek skin-tight suits often worn by DC superheroes. I decided to turn him into a criminal for hire, specializing in stealth missions ranging from theft to assassination. Upon first meeting him, most don’t take him seriously due to his flamboyant and often arrogant air about him, and those who know him professionally refer to him as the “Shadow Harlequin,” a title he fully embraced, dying his hair and wearing makeup and elaborate black and white costumes. He is agile fighter and skilled acrobat, and also has outlandish yet deadly signature weapons. Some of which include poisoned throwing cards and (his personal favorite) gymnastic-styled ribbon wands lined with wire that when whipped can cut through flesh.

Half-Caucasian and half-Chinese, he has an almost androgynous beauty that has often worked to his advantage. He was born Jian Song, the son of a rhythmic gymnast. His father was absent, but his mother raised and trained him from a young age in gymnastics. As talented of athlete he was, he still fell into trouble with the law from a young age, mostly through pity theft and con artistry. It wasn’t until he stole from a crime boss in the Golden Triangle of Asia that he became a professional. Instead of having Song killed, the crime boss was impressed and charmed by Song and took him under-wing. This helped Song set root in the Golden’s underworld and build connections and a reputation. Within a matter of years, Song was doing business in Europe and America, taking whatever jobs came his way.

I see him as the kind of guy who will get the job done, but even after robbing you blind will blow you a kiss before flipping out the window. Hence the final picture.
