Description After realizing there are no drawings of Eddy's brother in either of my galleries, I started doodling him again from memory. The hat's a bit off. It shouldn't be so long...but its sort of how I remember drawing him on the boards.

The thought that Eddy strove so desperately for (and yet failed) to live up to the ideals of a sociopath adds this whole other layer of depth to Eddy and his struggles. I know that existing in the shadow of such a person can leave deep marks. Its too bad we never got to give Ed some heavier emotional key note like Eddy and Edd have, but I don't know if he really needed it. Ed's sort of the "Glue" that binds all the Eds together. He's the only one who seems at all comfortable with himself, probably and ironically making him the most comfortable of the three.

*I know Bro never smoked in The Big Picture Show, but he does in my mind

Very nice, especially the one with Eddy scooting away from him. I imagine him as a smoker also: whereas Eddy has paler skin around his eyes (i.e. goggle tan?), his big bro has red skin, making it look like he's high... XD
I really enjoyed the unprecedented seriousness from the series when it came to Eddy's bro, who is indeed a "sociopath" as far as I can tell. Eddy's trying his best to please his bro's standards does add a sympathetic element to his character, where there was only humor before.
Great work here dude. Instant fav.

When I first heard that Eddy's Brother was in the movie, I nearly flat-lined.

But then I saw how much of a F**KING PSYCHO he is!

Why is it some of the characters I go mad over are either Douches, psychos, or in this case, BOTH?

Bro's "cool guy" pose at the bottom where Eddy is admiring him is giving me such a major giggle fit. I'm so glad that you decided to draw more of Bro, because I love all of this.

I think that it's too bad that Bro didn't get more screen time since I find him the most interesting character on the show. XD

It helps that my favorite characters usually end up being the most insane within their series, but I also enjoy looking through everything we do get to know about Bro and speculate about his life based on that. <3 The only reason why I'd want to know more is to rule out some of those many possibilities, without having to ruin the guessing game.

I am in awe of the colors. You know, I've got a bit of an Ed-ness.
I'm the eldest sibling, and let my younger siblings boss me around, more because I like them too much than I'm afraid of getting in trouble, though. I remember playing "Horsey", and baking them cookies, and being their "Servant for the Day", and ridiculous feats of strength involved in lifting both of them up(especially since they aren't much younger than me) when they were both to tired to walk up the hill on their own.
And since I've got a little brother and sister, I like to play the role of a big sister AND brother, since I'd be only elder sibling my sister has, and my brother needs a big brother figure to make up for the fact he has none, since he's already got at least one sister.
I've promised to scare away any date my sister gets, and brawl occasionally with my brother(and will later use my feminine perspective to help him "pick up chicks"), because, so long as it's not MY little sister, girls are allowed to date. On the other hand, I have mastered my sister's hair(can do virtually anything to it), and let my sister do his sistering for me. Sarah kind of FORCES Ed to do the girly things, but he's dressed her dolls, and all. While being her unwilling minion.
You know, I got off topic. Anyways, they're both embarassed of me, one, because they don't like when I bearhug them(or show affection in general), two, because I say weird things(They just don't get that I'm testing them for knowledge of the CONTEXT, and only once, when I drew someone with a giant jawbreaker, did my sister finally get something. Figures I say this to somebody who worked on Ed, Edd'nEddy, huh?)also, I am totally impervious to the squeam-inducing powers of gore, and am fascinated with aliens and zombies, and have loved monsters since my youth. If I were honest, the reason I act the way I do, is because I got my hands on grown up words and ideas by the time I was eight. I essentially grow up too fast, realized as much, and found I disliked certain norms in society, and found issues of today boring and irrelevant. As a direct result, I say, do, and dress as I please. I realized that life is boring, so I spice it up, by trying to amuse people, and myself, with like bits of irony nobody gets. Another thing, I get the point of Sheldon, I'm friends with the germs living on my skin, and hate washing up(with bleach) because that means I'm killing little friends. I hope that I offered insight into Ed as much as myself.

Also, we're both easily distracted. It's part of the experience of soaking up the little joys of life, I tend to get caught up in little details, maybe he does, too? The only think I can't really equate is the exact level of obliviousness he shows. The most I can think of is that he thinks that ignorance is bliss, and, combined with the distraction, is thus less incline to talk intellectually. I'm afraid I've got a brain that saps up details I'm NOT paying attention to, too, that and the fact that I like to learn for the sake of learning pulls me away from Ed and into Double D's territory. However, that's probably the big, major deviation from Ed-like behavior I exhibit.

You do certainly seem to have a lot in common with Ed! As is the case with most fans, I think a lot of us have at least one Ed to extensively identify with, including some overlap in between. I've always thought of myself being easily identifiable with Double Dee with shades of Eddy here and there.

And who couldn't love zombies?

Love this! Even though Eddy is my least favorite, I can't help but feel sorry for his misfortune of being a guinea pig for his brother's cruelty. I suppose it builds character?

I'm guessing that Eddy's and Edd's insecurities are rubbed off from each other. The lonely child exposed to the wickedness of siblings. But Ed, being the older brother, is effected differently. All he really needs as key notes is his comics and movies XD.

embrio In reply to Schnab [2010-05-19 22:16:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Ha.. I used to totally not get Eddy at all.. It wasn't actually until Take This Ed and Shove It that I "got him", liked him, and realized I have a lot in common with him. Just in time for the series to end! Or so I thought at the time.

As for Ed, In the original thumbs and outline for the movie, there were more moments that directly spoke of the brother/not-brother and older-brother relationships that the Eds had.. including one moment after Eddy told a joke passed down to him from his brother, where Edd was peering dreamily off the side of their little "duck boat" and wishing he could be a brother to someone too. This led to Ed gushing about how great being a brother to Sarah was (he really does love it) and afterward breaking down crying because he didn't think he was anyone's brother anymore since they ran away!

I know there's pretty much already a lot of crying in the movie.. and perhaps it didn't need more, but during production the Eds sequences were always likened to the journey made by the characters in Stand By Me. And there's a lot of crying in that movie too!

Excuse me for creeping on into this discussion, but OH MY GOD, THAT THING ABOUT ED CRYING BECAUSE HE RAN AWAY FROM SARAH IS DANGEROUSLY CUTE. D8 The whole concept of them chatting it up in the duckboat is pretty sweet, but DEAR LORD, that Ed part is making me need to draw it.

Once again, I feel the need to DEMAND that I animate these deleted scenes, even the ones without audio or storyboards.

In a couple of these sketches, Bro looks kinda like... a monkey... or Homer Simpson. :,D

Anyway, J'aime beaucoup!

AnimatEd [2010-05-12 04:47:08 +0000 UTC]

Ed's "key note" in my mind is that he's abusively neglected by his parents (as opposed to how Edd's parents aren't being mean with their neglect) and his relationship with Sarah, which I know I don't have to describe. It only really comes up when Sarah's present, though, so it could still use the same level of focus as Edd's and Eddy's family problems, but whenever it DOES come up, Ed feels like a very real person and not just joke machine.

Anyway, these drawings are BEAUTIFULLLL. I'm almost at Bro's first scene in my movie (most awesome coincident yet: one character repetitively calls his character "bro"!), so I hope you don't mind if some of these faces show up on him while he's smoking. I'll try to keep it to a minimum. XD I'm, like, freaking out over how much I love Bro's pose in the little image of Eddy admiring him at the bottom.

embrio In reply to AnimatEd [2010-05-12 19:23:49 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha. Thanks. I don't mind. Just glad you enjoy them.

Ed though: While those ideas do play into his character, they just don't seem to have the devastating effects that Edd's parents' neglect and Eddy's brother's abuse have had on those characters, respectively. Edd's situation seems to directly be responsible for things like Edd's obsessive cleanliness and eagerness to please authority (however unattainable it is). Its very similar to Eddy's obsessive need to be loved and to prove himself to the people HE loves. In both situations "being loved" is of utmost importance. But it seems as though Ed KNOWS he is loved. He understands, that in spite of weird punishments from his parents and abuse from his little sister, that they still care about him even when they act otherwise.

The "Campfire" scene I have often mentioned to you would have provided this type of character revelation... because its something that would affect the very foundation of him.

Again, I don't disagree that Ed's family stuff affects him--he just seems to have a much firmer grasp of where he stands in relation to other people and I think that's why he allows himself to be so strange. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AnimatEd In reply to embrio [2010-05-12 23:04:55 +0000 UTC]

I've theorized that Ed's stupidity could be partially self-inflicted, so he could be in denial and ignorant to the abuse he takes, but that may be looking too far into it. XD Hmmm.. are you saying the campfire revelation could be relevant to these problems in his life? Or is that a standalone insecurity? I don't think I've thought of a way to connect it to his family issues, unless I've forgotten it. I guess if he's looking for acceptance like Eddy then it could connect!

Also, I liked the thing you said about Bro being a true villain. If only he had been able to play a more active role in the story. It'd be awesome, AND I would've realized that was what I liked about him a lot sooner (though the role he DID get does make him seem more like a realisticly abusive older brother).

embrio In reply to AnimatEd [2010-05-25 22:42:32 +0000 UTC]

About the campfire: Yes. I think it would have given Ed the one thing he really seems to lack which is insecurity. Even when you look at how he follows Eddy around like an eager puppy through season 5 especially. Even his constant use as a prop could be perceived to have a willingness on his part associated with it. There's an overall theme of "belonging" to the movie and to know that even Ed needs that is sort of interesting to me. For the record, I do carry on as though everything during the campfire scene happened, regardless of whether we witnessed it or not. LoL

About Big Bro: Yeah.. I like the way he came out in that he's so casual about his abusiveness. We toyed around with all sorts of things--like him maybe making some amorous comment toward Nazz (being that she's supposed to be older than the Eds I'm not sure this quite worked after her treatment in season 5/6 where she was depicted being in the same grade)..

After a while it because apparent that it would be strange for the brother to even -consider- each individual cul de sac kid. They're children, what does he care? Which is why I guess it comes so easily to him when he's able to smack Eddy around right in front of them. He just doesn't care... and that, to me, is what makes him frightening. Everyone there who's not the brother has had their differences; there's certainly some kind of pecking order with Kevin and Nazz at the top and the Eds just scraping the bottom... but they've never faced "evil"--maliciousness, cruelty. I sometimes think its this that makes the Other Kids ok with the Eds in the end. Seeing the face of a true monster has finally put things into perspective for everyone. I mean, even all the shit Edd and Eddy have gone through gets a thorough leveling out.

AnimatEd In reply to embrio [2010-05-26 04:15:52 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, I believe that's all canon too. XD I love how everything matches up, even though the writers probably didn't always think these things out. That Ed secret and his willingness to do anything to belong can all fit in with how his family seems as though it just wants to forget him and start over with Sarah. It's really amazing how the characters kinda take on a life of their own like that. Like, Danny/whoever probably just thought it'd be cool if Ed lived in his basement, and now it's been made clear that Sarah's the favorite and it puts a darker spin on why exactly Ed has to live down there.

Oooh, that's interesting about Bro hitting on Nazz... She'd probably like that at that point, though, so the creepiness would be a bit lost, unlike his hitting on Edd. But yeah, that's always what I imagined about Bro's entrance into the movie: they'd all come to him expecting him to care about the stories they've all been going through, and he wouldn't give a shit because he's a grown up and these are a bunch of dumb kids he doesn't even know, and from there he'd kinda take over the plot. That last half of the paragraph... you need to make a drawing with that in the description or something-- too many dumb people can't figure out why the kids would like the Eds. It makes perfect sense to us, but apparently a believed-serial killer pulverizing some kids who bug you isn't enough to drop a grudge.

Here I go terribly off-topic: I honestly just can't imagine Nazz being older than the Eds. Everyone (save Sarah and Jimmy) has always been the same age as the Eds in my mind. XP They're all close in height and the girls all look like 12-year-olds.. Everybody develops at different rates, but if Nazz or Lee are teenagers then there's nothing really separating them from the Eds design-wise. Especially because they're called "the kids" and the Eds themselves are already right on the edge of being teenagers (technically they are in the movie, but 13 is still kinda kid-ish, I'll admit). I'd kill for a real Nazz episode, though, we need to freaking learn about her! She's been a character for the whole series and I feel like the movie's the closest I've come to connecting with her character. To make it worse, I fully understand Bro and he's been on-screen for about 8 minutes. DX How can someone in a show with no extras be less developed than the only new character who didn't even last 10 minutes? D:

vomitresponse [2010-05-12 03:58:44 +0000 UTC]

I really, really liked Eddy's brother's design, both visually and in personality, because he was enough like Eddy (or rather, Eddy like him) that you could see the resemblance, but not so much where he would've just been a bigger Eddy. He was his very own character, even if he wasn't on screen long.

Poor Eddy, walking directly behind him like a naive puppy, always getting too excited, too trusting, too close, and then getting kicked in the face.

And poor bystander Edd, who has to sit and watch the whole thing. XP

Its too bad we couldn't do another season. In addition to the possibility of the brother making a return, I constantly envision at least an episode or 2 of Eddy just trying to find himself again. All he's ever done is copy his brother's warped behavior... so perhaps he'd try mimicking others still as a desperate attempt to find something that "works".
