I totally agree. Robotnik from SatAM is win! I was a total Sonic the Hedgehog fan big time. I collected all the comics too.

It also warms my heart that the SatAM DVD set is decorated with fan-art. ^_^

I thought the fan-art thing was a really nice touch. They acknowledged the fans *hardcore*. I also loved the Ben Hurst interview that they included. Every once in a while I get this feeling that we (as animation folks) aren't supposed to like our jobs.. but man, is Mr. Hurst one PASSIONATE dude. I love it. Its cool to be honest about how much you love something, damn it.

You collect the comics, eh? I stopped around 100..? I think. It got a little too far removed from what I once enjoyed. How is it nowadays?

I haven't collected them in years. I got beyond 100 but I'm not sure how far beyond that when I stopped collecting them. It was after King Acorn came back from the void and most of his crystalization was gone and Sally's brother was there and they actually had something of a kingdom and they began to draw Robotnik more like Eggman. In my opinion, the glory days of the Sonic comics were just after they came out with the Mecha Sonic special (issues 24 and 25? I can't remember.) The comics were really awesome for a while and Spaz's cover art (and the art he did for the specials) was second to none. Don't get me wrong, Axer is full of awesome and you can definitely see that he was influenced by Spaz's Sonic but the Sonic comics began trying to emulate the art style of the Sonic Battle game for Game Cube and stuff. But to be honest, I felt like Archie Comics showed the Sonic comics very little respect by letting some of the worst comic book artists I've ever seen do the pages in the regular comics. When I'd see those poor drawings and weak compositions, it killed my soul just a little bit. I wish I had gotten into drawing Sonic comics for Archie. I would have done them proud! If there's one thing I can draw with my eyes closed, it's Sonic characters... the old-school style.

Ugh, there I go on a rant. But yes. I agree with you on the interview with Hurst on the Sonic DVD's. I feel the same way when I'm listening to the commentary on the Futurama DVD's. I LOVE hearing about cartoon creators who take pride in their work! In the 80s and early 90's there were a lot of cartoons that were just mass-produced and it was as if there was no art direction at all. As a child I literally felt like cartoons was a very limited medium for story-telling because it had to have been so difficult. I mean, how often have we seen Mario's voice coming out of Luigi's mouth or when dancing is depicted it's just a non-rhythmic twitching to music. It wasn't actually until Futurama and listening to the commentary when I realized how much thought and effort they had put into it and I came to realize that if someone has enough passion for it, then animation can be the medium where anything is possible.

(Sorry I was attempting to respond to this last night but I fell asleep):

Ha! I do remember the "Mecha-Sonic" era. I agree, Axer is "ok"... but I used to sit there and actually copy Spaz drawings--that was one of my major learning bumps. Everything he did was so wonderfully round, lol. He made the construction a lot easier for my child-mind to understand, that's for sure. It was like learning from a Junior version of Todd McFarlane. I didn't much like how he drew Sonic, but his Sallys were great, along with the rest of the cast.

And, oh god, yes. The art inside was so, so terrible. I too, would love to have worked on it. Do you have the episode 50 "Director's Cut"? I sent in some fan-art once and I believe you can see an incredibly-fucking tiny version of it in there. Ken Penders (ironically the cover artist for the DVDs) is one of the *worst*. At least Art Mawhinney and that Gallagher guy were expressive. Penders comics are like replacing the cast with wooden boards. Stiff, expressionless, unappealing. Very sad for what could have been very emotionally gripping.

You know, I haven't listened to the Futurama commentaries.. I might have to check them out. Some shows are certainly the exception: pouring their hearts into the medium. When it comes to crushing spirits, there's certainly a lot we can blame.. the entirety of the 80's included. LoL Old DiC is the worst. Have you ever seen Captain N: The Game Master? There are fucking backgrounds MISSING!!!!

When you said "episode 50" did you mean "issue 50"? Because I went and dug through my drawer of stacks of Sonic comics and sorted through them until I found issue 50 "Part 4 of 4, End Game) with Robotnik and Sonic on the cover like they're fighting and it has a gold trim. Hmm. September, 97. I was 15 at the time. ^_^ (incidentally, it seems I only have through issue 171, pencils by Tracy Yardley. Her drawings are very good. Great facial expressions and believable movement)

I never sent in fanart but I did write them a letter regarding the cover art for one of the comics that was an obvious homage to the Fantastic Four comic cover and they wrote me back and confirmed and thanked me for being such a great fan and to have noticed.

You copied Spaz art too? I LOVED the way he drew Sally (and Bunny.) You're right about the roundness. I actually started drawing women's abdomens with that roundness because I thought it looked so good. And his dynamic hang gestures. Wow! The meaty part of the palms were so full and the fingers were so graceful (even if the poses were impossible to reproduce on one's own hand in real life.) I copied the heads of the guardians on my bedroom wall and I copied a two-page spread he drew of Knack the Weasel knocking Sonic out with a barbell from issue 40!

You mentioned Penders doing a bad job but I also have to point out, the artwork of Butler just makes me sick to look at it. I agree with you about Mawhinney. His stuff is VERY comicbook-esque. It may be a little too "toony" but he depicts motion well. Nelson Ortega's art work looks like a child drew it.

Oh, you mentioned Captain N: The Game Master! When I mentioned earlier about the twitching dancing I was picturing in my mind a scene where Kevin tries to teach Lana to dance. *shudders.* I have to admit, I love the show but I equally have to admit that the quality is sooooooo bad. My 3 year old daughter loves that show so much though. We have the entire series (which is a measly 4 disks) So the badness is fresh in my mind. ^_^ But I think the two Mario series (The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and also the Mario 3 series) were such poor quality.

But even cartoons that weren't that abysmal, I could point out even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (which was my favorite show as an 8 year old) would often have Leonardo's voice coming out of Donatello's mouth or headbands changing colors frame to frame.

Back on Captain N, (and other cartoons from Dic) many of the motions were done too conveniently. Like Donkey Kong would stand still for several seconds, not moving at all, while someone did their heroic stunt. I think if you're going to have something happen, the animator can't forget about the motion of the other characters.

Speaking of motion, that's one thing I like about Wallace and Gromit. I know it's claymation and not cartoons, but it is still stop motion animation. The animators make other things move besides just, say, the mouth of the acting character. There are finger-twiddlings and eyebrow-wagging, and this and that.

Cartoons should take a lesson from comic books (dynamic comics, I mean.) And the lesson should be, interest in every frame. It gets boring to look at everyone 3-quarter front view from the waist or shoulders up. Excite the viewers senses! Give 'em interesting angles and lively gestures. But then again, I'm not in the animation business so I can't say how difficult that would be to do. I know that Jhonen Vasquez wanted a more comicbook feel for his cartoon "Invader Zim" and you can definitely see it in the rich blacks, panoramic backgrounds, varying angles and views, and over dramatizing even mundane activities. It's like farcing a comicbook but honoring them as well. Which makes sense, considering Jhonen Vasquez, Rikki Simons, and Roman Dirge are all comicbook artists.

Nice no Argument from me SatAM was my favourite Sonic Cartoon Sonic X doesnt count since it was Animesque/Anime and was too friendly, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is just bat shit crazy and Sonic Underground had too much singing and prophecy never really delivered I remember they had Robotnik and his goons hypnotized and could've had them lock themselves up or jump off a cliff but just erase their memories.

Robotnik's voice was awesome aswell and your Artistic skills bring him out well It's how I'd like to imagine he looked in the final episode when he's keeps saying Hate,Hate,HATE! ^^

Dr. robotnik is sonic's second villain, he appears in the 4th season, robotnik is a crude, vile, and vil doctor, that wishes to have everyone roboticized and bow to him as leader, But then he was also defeated by sonic, in many ways, he is also beaten during the heisei era, Sometimes his ways are rue to mobius' way, Dr.robotnik is the second villain for sonic during the Heisei times.
