you have to understand.
Some good examples of slapstick are from Looney Tunes where Bugs Bunny drops a bridge on Yosemite Sam head.
Although it certainly would have killed a real adult, he didn't seem to get hurt.
Or take for instance when Jerry lowered an ironing board on Tom's head while running, so his head crashes into an iron.
Even when Tom was cut in half by an axe he still didn't seem hurt at all.
A badΒ example of slapstick was the infamous toenail ripping scene from "house fancy."
The reason is because that scene showed blood (which you should never show) and it had Squidward screaming in pain along with it.
The result is it makes the viewer hurt instead of making the viewer laugh.

Screaming in pain isn't really an indication. Β The main example of why the toenail scene doesn't work is because it's too grotesque and graphic. Β That's why it tends to make viewers cringe. Β There are plenty of slapstick moments where the characters scream, like in Tom and Jerry.
Blood is okay to view in certain cartoons (I've even seen some less than mature cartoons show some glimpses), but it's best to not make it appear this graphic.
Plus the thing only lasts a few seconds, and I do think people overreact to it, though I wouldn't particularly call it good slapstick.

Last I checked, it did come across as painless as possible, since they generally seem to recover in no time, even when several of these things are actually fairly serious injuries in real life, if not the kinds of things that actually kill a person.
The Three Stooges is no stranger to it. I remember one episode where either Larry or Curley ended up acting as a literal electric conductor when fixing up a place, being electrocuted, and the only affect it had on him was slightly pausing before yelling "Testing! One-Two-Testing!"

Stop talking about the three stooges.
Explain how Misty hitting Ash with a log appeard painless.

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-09-19 21:30:13 +0000 UTC]
Ah, let's see, the fact that the very next scene has Ash acting as though nothing actually happened instead of, you know, showing him at the ER with tubes placed on his body and bandages all over his head? That sounds a lot like it appeared as painless as possible. Besides, it's not like Misty was never hit by a log under similar circumstances , and she got up just fine in the episode which we are ledΒ to assume was around the same day.

Actually, it was originally reblogged from AllThingsMisty who reblogged it from there. It didn't register when I reblogged it though. I just chose that over my own reblogged post because you may have come under the impression that I manufactured evidence if I reblogged my own post and wanted to avoid that accusation.

Slapstick involves physical humor quite a few times, even deliberate whacking of someone (what, do you really think the people doing that are merely accidentally hitting them? In the case of the Three Stooges, they actually hit each other deliberately). I can definitely say that at the very least Three Stooges actually IS closer to physical abuse, though, considering there are a few instances where they deliberately hurt each other.

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-07-30 21:48:23 +0000 UTC]
Actually, to say Love Hina merely has "a Tsundere" would be a massive understatement. The way that franchise is written, Keitaru would end up with various bruises and actually nearly end up killed by every single one of the Hinata Inn's residences just for looking at them the wrong way, and only one of them, Naru Narusegawa, is actually of the Tsundere stereotype, that's how bad it is.

This is not the only time Misty abused Ash.
She slapped him twice, and is censored in the dub.

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-07-30 21:56:52 +0000 UTC]
The first time, she thought Ash basically endangered his own PokΓ©mon (which is technically true, since his throwing a rock at Spearow when trying to catch it IS the reason why Pikachu is currently in his condition) and was angered that he seemingly wasn't aware of what happened to his PokΓ©mon. Not good, but somewhat forgivable given the circumstances.
The second time, Misty slapped Ash because he did something extremely callous and stupid immediately beforehand, where he sicced his Caterpie against a Pidgeotto and nearly got him killed as a result, certainly gravely injuring him. In other words, he actually DID deserve that slap, 100%. Had it been me in her positionΒ and I saw Ash do that to Caterpie, I'd probably rush over and pin him against a tree and angrily demand he apologize to Caterpie for senselessly endangering him instead of just slapping him. Even among rookie mistakes, that just crossed the line (even most rookies would know that siccing a bug PokΓ©mon against a bird PokΓ©mon is an exceptionally stupid idea).
Believe me, these are nothing compared to what Jessie frequently does to James on a regular basis, or heck, what the Hinata girls, especially Naru Narusegawa, frequently do to Keitaru Urashima in Love Hina.
And besides, Brock and Ash have hit Misty a few times as well, so it's not like Misty's the only one who dishes out the physical stuff in their group. Actually, I'm surprised you even put up with PokΓ©mon all this time considering every single one of the characters dishes out physical abuse one time or another.

Maybe, but it doesn't change the fact that Ash and Brock have hit Misty a few times as well, so she's not the only one of the main cast who's hit someone or conducted physical abuse.

IMO, Ash in BW was even worse.

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-07-30 21:59:09 +0000 UTC]
I can at least agree regarding Ash and BW were horrible. I don't know about Iris, though. From what I could gather from what people said about her, she's at least good enough to make an adequate replacement for Misty, but on the other hand, since she didn't receive any episodes where she differentiates herself from squealing girls acting like animals like in Princess vs. Princess with Misty and the Fiorello Fangirls, it's inconclusive whether she's not a Hina stereotype (though she most likely isn't one from what I could gather).

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-07-30 22:47:32 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. Indigo League Ash may have had his fair share of problems, but at least most of those can have inexperience as an excuse (not all of them, though. The Caterpie vs. Pidgeotto incident was simply inexcusable). BW doesn't have that at all, especially when Ash was supposed to be a veteran by that point.
