The problem with Iris is not of her own making:
Had Ash never developed past the arrogant idiot hero he was in Kanto, Iris' criticism would've come off as merely trite and overdone.
Had Ash retained the development that he had in Hoenn and Sinnoh, Iris would've been just a clueless hypocrite.

But her insults came off of Ash being literally reset into a rookie for writes-know-what-reason utterly giving the recurring audience who saw Ash develop over time a gut wound.  Iris' insults were salt upon that gash.

Now, I will contend/concede that Iris successfully deconstructed Misty, in concert with the favoritism of the tsundere stereotype waning in the past few years, if not in anime in general then at least among the Pokemon fandom and/or writers.  Much of Misty's popularity was due to her seniority and her having a then-popular characterization.  Misty was the first female companion, so the only precedent she had was other Anime females.  And guess what was the popular archetype at the time?

And the fact that we were less sensitive to violence-on-a-whim, or even disproportionate retribution in non-violent ways, even only 15 years ago, cannot be overstated in this comparison.  We've only began questioning the female-favored side of the typical Double Standard relatively recently.

The problem there is that Iris was denied the right to be her own character.  This is why I am looking forward to her eventual reappearance: to see how she is written within the more positive vibes of this series has grown as a character, and why I was disappointed that she didn't join the group in Dendemille town in time for traveling over the frozen passes.

Exactly, Ash was an idiot in BW, that's why Iris called him a kid.

I've finished watching a marathon of Unova saga and I'm currently doing the same with Kanto saga and Iris has a whole bunch more development than Misty got in the first season alone.

I love this!!! Thanks for uploading ^_^

Too be fair.. My problem with Misty's Abusive Side was that she only did it to male characters.. making it not only annoying.. but made her feel a little sexist also -.- Made even worse by the fact that Female Characters annoyed her also, yet they go untouched... I may be taking it too seriously.. but that's how I saw it

Too be fair, Misty wasn't really even a Tomboy. She shown at multiple points that she's just as girly as May, Dawn & Serena. Her character was all over the place.. Iris felt like a Tomboy too me

otnesse In reply to waterninja12345 [2015-07-30 21:36:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, of COURSE she only does it to the male characters, since she's the only female character on the show at the time. At least, the only female main character at the time. How can she do it to any other female characters when at the time, she was the only female character. Heck, we didn't even get two females on the same team for a prolonged period of time until, what, XY?

I'm pretty sure she does the same to Jessie anyways, and last I checked, Jessie's female as well, so no, she definitely doesn't exclusively beat up males. And I know she did attack Nastina as well, and she's female.

And it's not like she never gets hit or attacked by the male leads either. I definitely know Brock hit her twice and even grappled her once, all in the same episode. And Ash actually ended up sending a log at her face during the training session with Bruno.

And honestly, you think that's sexist or bad? Wait till you see how Naru Narusegawa and the other girls behaved towards Keitaru Urashima in Love Hina, they're WORSE. At least Misty doesn't beat up Ash for accidentally walking into her room at the wrong time in a manner that's clearly an accident. Those girls in that series do that constantly with Keitaru. Misty's actually very laid back even at her worst compared to them, heck, compared to Jessie even.

And for the record, I don't hate Iris at all. Heck, I actually felt she was very likely to be an adequate replacement for Misty from the little I could gather about her and was certainly better than May and Dawn (though I will admit that overall my analysis on her is inconclusive since unlike May or Dawn and their respective series, I haven't even watched a single episode or movie of BW). Both characters at least weren't of the Hina stereotypes perpetuated by Love Hina, the Pokémon episode Princess vs. Princess via the Fiorello Fangirls, Maron from DBZ, the girls from Battle Vixens, and the like.

Hey, I just heard DBZ fan, he told me everything.

I just want to say that even HE says Misty didn't hate being a gym leader.
Are you sure you got your info from him?

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-09-19 19:26:10 +0000 UTC]

He also said that she would rather be travelling than actually running the gym, though. And while I will concede that "hate" would probably be too strong of a word, it's nonetheless pretty clear she didn't actually like or love running the gym either (I doubt a person who likes running the gym would explicitly compare her situation as Gym Leader in one of the hosos to the fairy tale Cinderella, which as you know is about a woman who is basically forced by her own family to be enslaved by them.), and DBZ Fan made it pretty clear she doesn't like running the gym.

Nice that you unblocked me, BTW.

EmperorPalpitoad In reply to otnesse [2015-09-19 19:52:39 +0000 UTC]

So your saying Misty's neutral about running the gym?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-09-19 19:57:02 +0000 UTC]

No, I never said she was neutral, nor was it what I'm implying for that matter. I said she doesn't like it. She may feel obligated to run the gym, but that doesn't mean she likes it. Think of it like school: Kids feel obligated to go to school, yet they don't actually like it.

And explicitly comparing it to Cinderella really isn't something that even someone who is neutral to running the gym would say.

EmperorPalpitoad In reply to otnesse [2015-09-19 21:11:51 +0000 UTC]

What was the episode?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-09-19 21:22:52 +0000 UTC]

It definitely wasn't a main series episode but Pokémon Chronicles. I think it was either Cerulean Blues or A Date with Delcatty. I definitely know with the latter that she shook her head in shame over Daisy's ignoring her plight in the Japanese version but was cut out in the dub. And I also am certain that in the Japanese version in Date with Delcatty had Misty's resignation to be working in the gym worded in such a way that made clear that she was only working at the gym because her sisters were useless at being Gym Leader than her actually enjoying running the gym or even being neutral about it.

I'll post the post where he discusses this:

www.pokecommunity.com/showthre…

Also, a bit of a correction, it was Blue Badge of Courage that had the Cinderella reference, not Cerulean Blues. Cerulean Blues was the episode where Misty returned to the gym, not the one where she had to restore the Cascade Badge supplies due to her sisters neglecting to restore them.

I wasn't "Telling you that".. I was simply stating my opinion

If I am taking it too serious.. guess what.. I don't care. If people really found it funny.. either they don't care and find pain funny.. or their just screwed up. I'm aware other media in Japan did it.. but if I do come around to watching it, they won't get off so lightly.. unless they handle it better

Iris is a character who starts off being a Hypocrite, thinking she was big shit, when she had a team full of derps. She grew from this, with her team becoming fully battle ready, an she gets appointed a dragon type gym leader

Misty became nicer.. that's her development.

This makes Iris a stronger female lead that Misty in my eyes

Both were annoying at times.. but at least Iris's doesn't come off as sexist to me

Misty's "physical assaults" were played for laughs, and Ash never really got hurt. Also, Misty was genuinely supportive of Ash.

Iris was an arrogant little troll and an hypocrite.

Also, Misty is a better tomboy than Iris.

Iris' hypocritical "what a kid" teasing was also played for laughs, Ash never really got his feelings hurt, and Iris was genuinely supportive of Ash when it counted.

There's scarcely a difference. Both girls picked on Ash for whatever reason, but both girls are ultimately his friend.

Physical assaults ARE NOT FUNNY.

Like Mrs. Puff trying to literally kill Spongebob in Demolition Doofus was played for "laughs"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmperorPalpitoad In reply to SkeeterMania [2016-03-30 22:30:35 +0000 UTC]

the point is not to make the slapstick excessive.

👍: 1 ⏩: 0

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-07-30 22:02:32 +0000 UTC]

You're definitely not going to like the Three Stooges, any Looney Toons cartoons, or anything like that then, considering there was a LOT of abuse in those cartoons by various characters. Actually, I'd suggest you avoid watching ANY TV or reading comics, because they are going to feature a LOT of physical assaults.

And the word you're looking for is slapstick, since those physical assaults are meant to be that, slapstick.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

EmperorPalpitoad In reply to otnesse [2015-09-19 19:21:02 +0000 UTC]

And the writers fail to portray slapstick.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

otnesse In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2015-09-19 19:28:22 +0000 UTC]

Not really. It's also the same kind of slapstick used in the Three Stooges. Just saying. And does it really matter if its anime or not? It matches the definition, anyways.

This will probably get me blocked again...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmperorPalpitoad In reply to otnesse [2015-09-19 19:51:57 +0000 UTC]

well no.

You see, as Mr. Enter said: "The most important part of slapstick is to make it appear as painless as possible"
This is very difficult to do so

👍: 1 ⏩: 2

SkeeterMania In reply to EmperorPalpitoad [2016-03-11 17:02:30 +0000 UTC]

That's an unreasonable standard.

Slapstick involves exaggerated physical activity which goes beyond common sense.  In real life, many of these stunts will likely result in death, but because this is a cartoon, the writers and animators are free to exaggerate pain to their level of choosing.

Judging from what I've seen, Mr. Enter doesn't really have that great of an understanding of how classic slapstick works.

And like otnesse said, the slapstick involves already comes across as painless as possible.
