PERFECT!! Most Lan fanart I have see he looks ancient. But this hear makes him look about 35-40 which is about how old he is in the book.

Thank you very much!! Me too! I really don't like how he is represented by a lot of artists as a wrinkled, greyed out old man in his late 50's. I am glad you like it

Another reason why I like your representation is that he is described as being stone faced. A stone doesn't have wrinkles.

I just wish people would stop making him look like he is in his 50's. Β He shouldn't look that old and wrinkled

This is awesome, almost how I pictured him. Β I hate how most people depict him, they make him look old and worn out. Β

no problem, no reason to apologize. Β I am glad others see him as smooth, sleek and cold. Β Not old, grey and wrinkly, Nynaeve would surely not love him then!Β

My God! That look! You nailed it! This is actually how I pictured Lan. Not aged as so many of the artworks depict. And great job with the lights, shadows and color scheme!

Thank you very much! Yea, there is no way I could picture him so old and haggard like a lot of other depictions. 40yr old people are not grayed out shriveled grandparents. All the 40-50yrs old people I know look very young. I am glad you liked it!!

Have you seen some of the animated pieces floating around dA? I think there's one of Sauron, and I'd love to see this piece come alive.Β

I am not sure I have seen the animated pieces you are speaking of. I will have to search for it...hopefully I will find it Thank you very much for the fave and kind words...means a lot to me since you are in my top 5 favorite artists. I keep hoping to one day see a post of your process or a livestream so I can watch your art style in process

Yeah, just search for Sauron, I think it will come up, it's very cool.Β
Wow, you're very welcome-your work is incredible, the lighting, color, I'm amazed by people's talent.Β
Haha, one day soon I will. I always get so self conscious when the computer is recording me, but I'll set up for something I feel confident in, perhaps a SanSan piece

Heh, I know what you mean. I just post my process stages for anyone who cares. I figured if they don't like the way I work they would just ignore it and move on. I know it helped me a lot seeing the start of paintings by professional artists and being happy knowing that it didn't look any fantastic until they invested time into polishing and fleshing out the painting.Β

Yep, that's how I feel too, especially seeing some master painters at work. My issue is that once it's time to start polishing/fleshing out the painting I tense up, and not finish it lol. Need to get over that hump.Β

Yea, I wanted him to look middle aged since Nynaeve is head over heels about him. I just found it a bit weird for him to be much older than her. Like...way much older. Thanks for the compliments on the eye! It is the best feature of the painting. Glad I captured the warder stare

Draw him as Viggo Mortenson portraying Aragorn, then put the headband on him. That's MY Lan, lol!Β

endave In reply to thirstformusic [2013-07-23 12:27:23 +0000 UTC]
LOL....then it would be Aragorn not Lan Most people default to picturing characters in books to similar characters from other books that have been cast on TV. People see Daenerys and Jon Snow as whatever HBO picked for the cast....I still don't see either of them looking that way
He is supposed to look much younger in my mind and she is supposed to look more distinct with sharper features.
It is the beauty of our minds... we get to make them look exactly how we pictured and nothing except a damn near perfect representation will alter our views on how they should look. Stay strong to your Lan!

mm, i havent seen game of thrones. Nor will I, until i pick up the books. Which i may not do. I hear theres a lot of rape scenes in that. I've also been told that its more about gaining power than a fantasy world and magic etc. I plan to read the first book, when i can, and maybe go from there.Β
But no, viggo mortenson is viggo mortenson, so i can just use his face where i want it. He played Aragorn, but he also played some guy in a movie named Hidalgo, and probably countless others. I just find aragorn extremely attractive despite his age, and i think Lan should be the same.Β

What can i say? He's not my type. Aragorn is. Thats why i try to imagine him that way xD I really like Lan, because i really like Nynaeve. I will say that you've got the age right though. I personally think that Lan should not have many wrinkles, even if he's middle aged. That warder bond should gain him at least that much; it would make sense if it did, because Aes Sedai live like 2 hundred + years (not even counting the kinswomen!) so their warder should last at least close to that long. otherwise, that just sucks.Β

Critique: Place holder
Hey there, I'd like to give you feedback in the form of a critique:
I think the biggest avenues of improvement lay in the hair, stubble and lips. You've got a really good sense of color here. Your style is a level in between painterly and realism. For the lips, they feel flattened with the harsh black line dividing the top and bottom limp. Lips darken gradually in wrinkles which I see you attempted but I suggest you look at an image of male lips to more accurately capture the 3 dimentionality of it. The stubble around his lips also feel a little flat compared to the range of values on the forehead. Try using a pore brush or debris brush at varying levels of color to add complexity to his face. His hair, I feel, could be improved the most. The colors are gorgeous and I'd love to see them carried through with as much detail and polish as possible. Backlit hair tends to reveal strays strands more observably, adding a few wisps would speak volumes for the detail. When you make strokes as heavy as the ones framing his face, be sure as well to note where they begin and end to make sure they don't appear out of nowhere from beneath his hair.
You're at a really good position in your painting to add details and polish those last aspects of the portrait. It's this final step that really pulls together a piece and demonstrates discipline and passion. Thanks in advance for your understanding, we will continue to try our best to provide unbiased and constructive feedback.

This is great! Love how the eyes seem to be the focus almost without trying. I love your relaxed, fast style, and I wish I could paint as quick as you - heck till now I can't finish my next piece and it's been forever.

Thank you very much for the compliment! Huge deal for me when your art is just so amazing! Right off the bat I knew I wanted Lan to have intense eyes...the deadly stare of a warder
My "fast and relaxed" style is really a lack of patience and skill lol. I want my work to look more polished and detailed, but I just don't have the vision and time. I guess I am going for the quantity over quality idea....here is to hoping I keep learning and improving while doing that
Thanks once again for the comment!

Coolest character in the book.
"Duty is heavier than a mountain, Death lighter than a feather."
(...Right beside Mat.)
And the intensity of his eyes makes me hope I haven't done anything to cause him to attack.
Excellence.
How far along in the books are you? (So I know not to spoil something with my comments.) XD
