Description As suggested by a user and after some thought, I feel the need to add:

I invest a lot of time and effort into my art and would like to be credited. I fear the possibility of art theft but I want people to be able to see the picture in fair quality. I simply respectfully urge that you ask me if you can use it, and I'll probably say yes simply asking that you credit me. I will flip out if I see someone trying to sell any of my art. This stuff is free for a reason. ;/

=================================

This is from the meme... I just felt like I needed to FINISH something, so I colored this. It'll be simpler colors in the meme itself... actually maybe not. I can't be too sure if I'll go crazy with the colors in the meme. I might.

People freakin' think McCoy's nickname is because he only had his "bones" left after a losing a brutal custody battle with his wife, but that is a stupid misconception created by the 2009 movie. McCoy's nickname "Bones" is short for "Sawbones," an affectionate nickname Kirk gave to the surgeon. The new movie takes the nickname and makes is a representation of pain, but that's not what it was supposed to be.

[/Fanboy Rant]

I wanted to draw a full body, showing his foot all the way, but it would be a looong picture. I might still go back and add the rest of his leg. Edit: Added the other leg. And some more background.

This is so cute!

Yeah...I'm not sure why they decided to change the origin of Bones' nickname in the new movie. Unless they just didn't know, so they made something up? That's kinda weird though, because there was a self proclaimed trekkie involved in the writing process. Two, actually.

Maybe they changed the origin of the name because Kirk and McCoy met under different circumstances?

All I know is that "sawbones" makes more sense.

Thanks.

Yeah, you'd think they'd know, and changing the origin of his name was not necessary... McCoy's circumstances hardly had changed, if if at all.

yeah, I know. It's so weird. But then again, they made a lot of weird choices with that movie.

I actually really liked it, it wasn't necessarily a bad movie...just that they made some odd decisions.

It wasn't bad, it was just very... off. From TOS. And it annoys me when people get 'em mixed up. >.>;

I just love the name 'Sawbones', but I think it's more of a 'Mirror' name, you know?

I just love the fact that he seems to be annoyed because he has to lay like that.

Mirror? Well the name was mentioned in "A Piece of the Action"...

Haha, indeed.

Mirror Bones is more like "sawbones" than the other Bones, don't you think? "Sawbones" has a evil ring to it, you know?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enterprising-bones In reply to JulietBeyondGoth [2010-10-06 21:13:58 +0000 UTC]

"Sawbones" simply means surgeon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JulietBeyondGoth In reply to enterprising-bones [2010-10-07 13:58:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but think it like this: "sawing the bones. With a huge motored saw. cutting the bones into pieces. Painfully" That's how I first understod it, when I first hear the word (bout 3 years ago)

enterprising-bones In reply to JulietBeyondGoth [2010-10-07 18:32:06 +0000 UTC]

I spoke to someone who better explained the word's meaning and it isn't negative.

JulietBeyondGoth In reply to enterprising-bones [2010-10-07 18:40:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know that. It just... sounds a bit harsh to my ears. Maybe because english isn't my native. Just because the word isn't negative it doesn't mean it can't sound like it is, eh?

Bones is such a darling <3

I'm glad someone else knew the original story behind his nickname. This fangirl approves of the fanboy rant. Cute pic, too. lol.

Kitty-Tashimono [2010-10-06 16:42:33 +0000 UTC]

Love it.

And to be fair, 'Sawbones' isn't really a term that's used anymore. I don't think a lot of people would get it- especially not the scrappy young Kirk in the new movie.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enterprising-bones In reply to Kitty-Tashimono [2010-10-06 17:48:26 +0000 UTC]

But... Star Trek is old school. People oughta learn about the origins to understand the show. It's also extremely easy to explain.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kitty-Tashimono In reply to enterprising-bones [2010-10-08 06:43:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, that would maybe be ideal. But a lot of JJ Abram's vision for the new movie is that you didn't have to be familiar with the show. Thus- new timeline, new actors, new nickname origin. Seeing as it's Kirk who gives him the nickname and Pine!Kirk and Shat!Kirk are two very different Kirks coming from very different places at meeting Bones at different times, it makes sense that they'd give him the nickname for different reasons.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enterprising-bones In reply to Kitty-Tashimono [2010-10-08 06:55:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, Star Trek didn't invent the term Sawbones. It's very old ship-lingo. Like they'd use it in the navy and stuff. But no, the new nickname origin was a load of crap. It twists McCoy totally backwards. I can't find any way to justify it other than someone was trying to be creative and make him morbid so that in the sequel they can play off of that drama.

oooh, pwetty~ o3o can i touch it?

and yeah, as Illzie said, no one in this generation knows what the hell Sawbones means, so the movie had to do something :/ i mean, it works, but i like the original origin of his nickname

enterprising-bones In reply to kenshin-chan64 [2010-10-06 17:49:53 +0000 UTC]

Bones dear might bite.

I think that's a load of crap.I didn't know what Sawbones was until I looked it up, either. It's not hard to find out. What they did was totally out of line for the character, because his name means something negative now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kenshin-chan64 In reply to enterprising-bones [2010-10-07 00:48:50 +0000 UTC]

bite? that's what the sign at the big bird's cage said, and the thing practically purred when i scratched it~

but you also have to remember, kids these days are reeeaally dumb. it was just a quick way for them to explain it :/ at least we know what it really means~ XD
although, i thought Sawbones was a negative name too back in the day.

enterprising-bones In reply to kenshin-chan64 [2010-10-07 01:47:17 +0000 UTC]

Was that The Big Bird Gene Roddenberry?

But even dumb kids know how to use Google. >.>;
Nah, Sawbones was... mildly insulting a LOOONG time ago, but not in the context Kirk was using it.

kenshin-chan64 In reply to enterprising-bones [2010-10-07 02:06:47 +0000 UTC]

haha! no, just a big cockatoo at some caves i visited. there was a big sign on his cage full of rules, and right when one of my friends read the 'do not put your fingers in my cage, i bite hard!', i had a finger in there and was scratching his neck. he was such a sweet bird and liked me :3

but intresting. i knew Sawbones was a term for doctors once, but i didnt know how mean it was or wasnt. (and kids are stupid these days. oh well, there's nothing we can do about the movie except stare and drool over the actors)

Illzie In reply to ??? [2010-10-06 14:59:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh Bones, you make me giggle.

In the movies defense, sawbones isn't a popular slang for surgeons anymore. McCoy can't be without his nickname so they had to make up another reason for getting it. Although, they could of tried something a bit less sad.

enterprising-bones In reply to Illzie [2010-10-06 17:50:33 +0000 UTC]

As I said to Kenshin, I didn't know what Sawbones was until I looked it up, either. They totally took a dump on Bones and Kirk by making his name a negative thing. D:<

enterprising-bones In reply to Illzie [2010-10-06 18:38:24 +0000 UTC]

I think they just were dumb. They made a LOT of mistakes with McCoy in the original 2k9 script.

enterprising-bones In reply to Illzie [2010-10-06 19:25:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it was horrendous, and I'm glad they changed it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Illzie In reply to enterprising-bones [2010-10-06 19:29:49 +0000 UTC]

What did they write?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

enterprising-bones In reply to Illzie [2010-10-06 19:47:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, one thing in particular that annoyed me was that McCoy got really snippy with Kirk and was saying, "Don't call me that!" when Kirk called him "Bones." It was horribly over bitchy and out of character.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Illzie In reply to enterprising-bones [2010-10-06 19:54:15 +0000 UTC]

I see. They almost killed McCoy's character, those blasphemers!

enterprising-bones In reply to Illzie [2010-10-06 20:06:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. It would have been very bad if they kept his over-aggression in there.

I think Karl Urban is hotness, so I can't hate the movie completely. Plus, Leonard Nimoy was in it. However, the 12th movie won't have him, so I can hate that one.
