Description
The Discovery One was a 140 meter long nuclear propulsion crewed interplanetary spacecraft. It was fitted with a spherical command module, which contained a magnetic rotation artificial gravity ring, multiple long-term suspension chambers, and the core of a HAL-9000 computer which controlled the entire vessel’s subsystems. The mission of the Discovery One was, at first, to bring the first humans to Jupiter to study the gas giant and the jovian moons, but it was later repurposed to investigate a strange radio signal coming from Saturn’s moon Iapetus. This illustration depicts the United States Spacecraft Discovery One arriving at Iapetus on the year 2001, and establishing visual contact with the source of the radio signal; a mysterious black rectangular slate, similar to the TMA-1 monolith recently found on the Moon. Before these events, the ship’s AI had killed the vessel’s crew except for the commander David Bowman, and as such had been disconnected from the ship’s systems by the aforementioned commander.
Inspired on Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey novel, and Stanley Kubrick’s motion picture of the same title. Based on Harry Lange’s interpretation of the ship from the novel, known as the “Dragonfly” Discovery One.
