Description Jump gates were the main mode of fast interplanetary transport before the fusion drive was invented. They used an electromagnetic rail system to accelerate and decelerate spacecraft to and from near-lightspeed, and thus enabled humanity to expand further and faster into the outer solar system. When the Crimson War broke out, the first objective of the Martian Colonies Defense Navy was destroying these orbital facilities, which connected the Earth and Mars, breaking the line of supplies that Mars was obligated to send regularly to Terra, which at the moment was going through a resource crisis. After this conflict ended, no more jump gates were built, because amidst the fiery hell of this bloody war, a better and safer way of travelling between the worlds of the solar system and beyond was found; the fusion drive, which, using the power of a star, generated a thrust so powerful that it could propel ships out into the Oort cloud and even nearby star systems.

This illustration depicts the seventh jump gate shooting a Sleipnir-class light freighter into a Mars transfer orbit, and another vessel preparing to be shot to Ceres. A bright beam can ve seen coming from the electromagnetic cannon of the jump gate; the vestige of the ship that was just propeled at 87% of the speed of light, and its light then red-shifting into oblivion. Below, Terra can be seen, and lurking in the void, is the crescent of Luna. Above is Sol, lighting up the wild, darkest and loneliest sea. Behind the jump gate there's another, bigger starship, using a nuclear rocket to enter a Terra-Luna transfer orbital trajectory. This propulsion system was the predecessor of the fusion drive; it was similarly efficient but not as powerful, and so jump gates were deemed more effective. Altough, this vessel is using one; this is due to the ship being too big to use a jump gate.
