Description My newest fictional old man crush, Captain Sam Vimes from Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

Described as a skinny bunch of bad habits (or something to that effect), he's the leader of the much maligned Night Watch in the city of Ankh-Morpork. Starts as a drunk in a gutter and moves his way up the social ladder as the books go on.

His uniform here is in no way right, but I figure for an hour with no reference it's not too shabby...besides, I like how his face came out.

I think I shall have more Discworld stuff coming...yes...

Looks Excellent! Vimes is possibly my favorite Discworld character.

Vimes face and expression and perfect! Even the pose and the way he's looking around - totally him.

Uniform looks good, don't know what you're worried about. Only thing I'd point out that looks odd is that there's no way in heck Vimes' breastplate would be that shiny and smooth (unless Sybil sneakily snuck out and replaced the old dented rusty one with a new one).

Maybe that's why he looks so cheesed off

"Man, gotta go get into a fight to scuff this thing up again..."

wonderful Vimes, this really is great work. I do hope to see more Discworld (particularly Vimes) fanart in future. Everything looks just great.

I really need to. I just got my copy of the Art of Discworld and reread Jingo so I think there's gonna be more in the future.

Regarding the uniform, like everyone's said the Watch is pretty flexible about that, but the gold breastplate just leaps out at me as wrong.
Still awesome though, although I suspect I might say that about anything with Vimes...

Then keep an eye out. I need a new desktop wallpaper and I think it may be Discworldian in nature...

His face came out great, and the colors are awesome.
The cigar makes him look like a pulp '30s detective in medieval armor. which is also cool.

Man, I could never get into Discworld! I tried really hard, and my Dad loves Pratchett...In any case, digging the colors on this, in particular the metalics.

You know, I tried to get into the books a few times and this past week it just kinda clicked for me. Breezed through 'The Colour of Magic" and then decided to get "Guards Guards" because I thought Sam Vimes description on Wikipedia sounded interesting and from there it was guff old man character love.

Kinda like reading a British sitcom.

And I think that's what does it for me...I like British authors, and I like British Comedy, but British Comedy Literature just doesn't do it for me!

Ah well, perhaps I'll try again in a few years. After all, I did finally enjoy Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy the last time I read it ^_^;

Actually a good way to get into it is to maybe watch some of the Sky 1 television movies like "Going Postal." You get a good intro to the world, see the characters and get a good flick to boot.

Like a Harry Potter vibe, but with less angst and more puns

I'm trying to get a copy of "The Hogfather" for our family Christmas viewing this year.

Geh...I think it's actually the puns that help kill it for me! That was how I felt about Piers Anthony, too.

Although, with Anthony, I really enjoyed reading his author's notes. Like, more than the books themselves. Seriously, if he put out a collection of his little essays about him talking to himself and his fans, I'd buy it!

Okay, and the Hogfather was the one book by Pratchett that I read and enjoyed (Got Sooz to thank for that ^_^)

Hey, as late as Jingo, the overall Watch "look" is still described as "funny shaped helmets through the ages", so uniforms are flexible.

And rusty.

I'm usually of the opinion that as long as Vimes's street uniform says "I don't intend to get hurt", it's right.

Personally, I love the face and the graying hair.

Thanks! From all the images I see it seems to be an amalgam of armor types, but I start getting picky about details

I can't see Vimes without gray in there. Hard livin' man. Haaard livin.

I love Vimes! And I really like your take on his face.

And I imagine the Watch are a bit ... flexible... about uniforms.

It's so hard not to just follow the Paul Kidby illustration of him too man. His work just gives him his own personality that it's just trying to take that and tweak it a bit to get the Vimes in my head. I might shorten the bangs a bit though. Most drawings of him I see have something a bit shorter although I kinda like the shaggy look.
