Description My contribution for Desktopography 2015, a collection of epic nature themed desktop wallpapers in various sizes: desktopography.net/
Check out the artworks, it's worth it! You can download this wallpaper in other sizes here: desktopography.net/exhibition/…

This Earth-like planet in a fictional solar system is orbited by a lot of moons that frequently eclipse the sun of the system. In such events, the local predators emerge from their cloud cover to go harvesting.

The cloudscape was created using some of my photos taken on a plane trip between Germany and Italy, with the addition of a photo from the NASA image library. The flying dragons are mostly a blend of snakes, alligators and bat wings. As always the elements are tied together with plenty of overpainting. Hope you like it!

Wow, this needs to be seen in full res, always. Oo To tell you the truth, my first glance to it was a bit disappointing, because it looks so small at first (and on top of that I'm on a 13"). Then I clicked for full res and... holy crap, the amount of detail is really amazing! I love this so much more now! I could just pick bits of it at full res and make several great wallpapers for this screen haha. The storms, the rider, the far dragons, the reflections on the closer ones... great job!

ErikShoemaker In reply to Rowye [2015-10-10 07:49:30 +0000 UTC]

so it was a good choice to upload this high resolution here this time... The entire thing was like 8500 px in width, so I think scaled down a lot of details got lost- thank you for your honest comment and I'm glad you liked it after all! And of course, full view is always recommended.

Rowye In reply to ErikShoemaker [2015-10-13 17:26:13 +0000 UTC]

8500px wow! I can't even work with half of that on my machine haha, and I also know that being on a 13" hinders me to watch as well as make art. In this I could barely see all those details, what a big surprise when I loaded it in full res! Loving it so much now. ^.^

ErikShoemaker In reply to Rowye [2015-10-17 11:51:53 +0000 UTC]

yes, indeed I had to upgrade my computer for photoshop only.
It is useful to prepare images in such a high resolution so you are able to offer prints and can provide high-res images to print media for features and such. It's frustrating if someone is interested in one of your works but you only have it in web resolution.

^.^

Most I can do now is around 3000x3000 (or 4000x2400, that kind of size), anything more than that my laptop brainfarts on it as soon as I start having a decent amount of adjustment layers. So these are definitely not enough for really large prints, but do alright for normal art prints... At this point I don't have the budget but for now I will keep dreaming of an iMac and a Cintiq tablet haha, I know it's all about time till I can afford it... (but also that it may be a long time and I'm set to keep squeezing art out of my old Macbook until then )

ErikShoemaker In reply to Rowye [2015-10-25 16:21:02 +0000 UTC]

well 3000*3000 is okay for now, but it's definitely harder to work on a notebook anyway. The screen might not be ideal for designers because it's small and likely doesn't display all colors correctly.
If you work on a stationary computer you can go for a bigger screen and upgrade relatively cheaply since photoshop mostly relies on a lot of ram.
But you are doing quite fine either way.

Rowye In reply to ErikShoemaker [2015-10-29 00:35:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I realized that my screen size is mainly why I can't seem to get small elements in my manips right (like these on this one, or the men in the Dune one), it's just really hard to work with things you can barely see when you have the whole image on screen. And it's very hard for me to work with only parts of the image visible unless I'm working on details. Always feel like everything in my works is too large.

But at this point my budget is in red so I gotta do with this laptop. I get the very nice colors of an Apple screen though, which I will miss dearly if it dies... 'cause if it does it now I'll be buying a cheapie windows laptop lol

ErikShoemaker In reply to Rowye [2015-10-29 10:27:52 +0000 UTC]

it definitely helps to have a larger screen, but it is not a must IMO. I did really notice a difference when I switched to another screen that the colors are not displayed well.

Actually, you pay a lot of money extra just for the name "apple", so you might even be able to get a better product with the same budget.
Apple computers are manifactured with a high quality level, but if you look at the hard facts, the interior, you can get much better options.

Yeah, my wife's new phone is way faster than my laptop lol... It wasn't very fast when I bought it back in the day either but, as usual I was short on budget and I wanted something that would allow me to perform my music live. That it did well, and I love the screen and OS, but I agree on pretty much everything else in the computer... you can get better for less huh! (that ignoring the fact that its DVD player worked for maybe a year, guess that's why they ship them without it nowadays lol)

haha, please tell my parents their fear is not rational. Still every time I take a plane I have to write them a message that I arrived safely..

It's not an *entirely* irrational fear, but statistically still the safest way to travel. Without the flying sky monsters of course!
