Description This image was created for a competition on [link] , where the objective was to turn the following concept art into a photorealistic matte painting: [link]

The contest was fun and very challenging. I worked a good 50 hours on my entry and there are still many things I'd like to change but I just can't work on it anymore and time until deadline has run out anyway.

I don't expect to win anything, but I learned a lot during the process and now I have a cool piece in my gallery. It will also be part of my 2013 calendar.

Wow, this is absolutely stunning, I'm speechless! This looks really beautiful and the details are incredible! I could never take a concept art to such a high level, I bet you need to be a very patient artist to get such an amount of detail and I'm a very impatient person... Wow, once again, the scenery is breathtaking! I also like the ship design! This definitely gets a well deserved fav!

thanks so much for the nice comment! Indeed a lot of patience was required here, and I usually don't have it either. The contestants were able to see each others wips, which was extremely motivating. It really made me wanna push my boundaries and create something equally amazing.

Thank you! Actually I rarely work that long on one image (usually it's around 15-20 hours). It may not look like much, but what took most of the time here is the specific cloud formation. I had to warp every single piece of clouds and adjust lighting accordingly, which was quite painstaking.

I must admit, this was the one of my favorite work on the Alien Cloudscape challenge. Very close to the sketch, good textured and cool locking!
