Description
The solar roofs are contructed to face the sun of their system at least 22 hours a day to maximize energy extraction. For scientists the platforms have also proven to be a valuable environment for new exotic lifeforms in flora and fauna because of the extreme tropical climate conditions. Over the years the roofs have also attracted millions of tourists, creating new metropolises much as New York City and Las Vegas in the 21st century.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
To create this work I used some of my shots taken on my trip to Miami (mostly those from the plane), so you could probably find parts of Florida in there. The planet was done with the 3D functions in Photoshop. I'm slowly starting to get the hang of that, although it's working really slowly and the quality it produces could be better. For parts of the planet texture I have to give the Nasa archives some credit. Other than that it's the usual matte painting techniques which bring the whole thing together.

Tell you the truth I haven't played Mass Effect but I had presumed the concept was a scientific concept with a proper name and research behind it; it sounds like an interesting read but without knowing the name it makes it hard to find - then again I haven't looked yet.

hehe, I don't really think it's very realistic at the moment. The solar energy we gain stands in no relation to the amount of energy required to rotate the structure manually in space. And I think with the sun burning the whole time the environment would soon go dry instead of having wide lush green fields as I pictured it here. I just thought it was a cool idea to illustrate, and who knows, maybe we are able to build something like that one day.

I saw the concept of what I was talking about on Star Trek last night and quickly wrote the name down; Dyson Sphere. This morning I did some light research and from I read is that the "solar roofs" as you called it shouldn't need to rotate by artificial means but via orbit. Of course this means there will always be day on one side and an eternal night on the other but with the energy gained life supported structures would be easy in comparison to the sphere itself.

There's some SF for us! We can dream. Even if we end up being bungling morons who can't spend on anything but grandmothers and sick people. The more I see what we do with our resources, the more I think we'll end up in all the post-apocalypse scenes I see on DA. But I love to see optimistic futuristic scenes of what we could do if we weren't so sharply headed for almost certain extinction. It looks like SF will have to suffer through a few years of pessimism about science and technology, but hopefully it will rebound, as I also hope people will too. Or better yet, perhaps we can create a less self-destructive sentience to put us in our places and allow us to put out energies into progress finally!

actually it's mostly done with perspective transformation and the puppet warp function to twist the landscape the right way, but it's basically a similar method.

Ich würde soo gerne auch wieder mal in Urlaub, aber als Lehrer muss man auch in den Ferien arbeiten (ich hatte über Ostern drei Klassenarbeiten, da kann ich nicht einfach wegfahren, sonst komme ich nicht mehr nach).
Außerdem muss man auch immer während der Hauptsaison verreisen. Das ist auch so ein Punkt...
Aber an Pfingsten will ich auch wegfahren!

lach nee, schön wärs! Teuer wars auf jeden Fall, aber das war halt mein erster richtiger Urlaub seit mindestens 5 Jahren und ich hab die Jahre über immer ein bisschen was beiseite gelegt.
In den Ferien wegfahren zu müssen stelle ich mir auch ein bisschen blöd vor, vor allem weil ja die Preise immer mächtig anziehen. Musst du denn auch in den Sommerferien Arbeiten korrigieren? Kann ich mir jetzt gar nicht vorstellen.

dein erster richtiger Urlaub seit 5 Jahren??? Ich war seit 10 Jahren nicht mehr richtig im Urlaub, weil ich entweder keine Zeit oder kein Geld hatte, aber man muss sich auch mal selbst was gönnen.
Ich würde auch mal gerne in die USA, aber ich habe noch nicht mal einen Pass. Den bräuchte ich dafür wohl.
Ich war bisher immer mehr richtig England orientiert, einfach wegen der Sprache. Ich kann das amerik. Englisch nicht ausstehen, für mich klingt das einfach zu vulgär, aber trotzdem würde ich mal gerne paar Orte dort sehen.

Ich war in New York und Florida. In Florida haben wir uns mit dem Auto Miami, Naples, Tampa und Orlando angeguckt. Wobei ich letztere nicht empfehlen kann, außer du stehst auf überteuerte Vergnügungsparks. Vor zwei Jahren hab ich in Baton Rouge/Louisiana gearbeitet und mir übers Wochenende mal New Orleans angeguckt. Ist auch ne richtig coole Stadt, aber sonst gab es in dem Staat eigentlich nichts zu sehen.
Der Pass für 6 Jahre kostet glaube ich um die 25 Euro und dann kommen halt noch biometrische Passbilder dazu. Für das Besuchervisum muss man 10 Euro berappen, das geht noch. Ein richtiges Visum dagegen ist ziemlich teuer.
Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass man als Englischlehrerin das amerikanische Englisch richtig scheußlich findet.

ich finde gar nicht, dass das britische Englisch gestelzt wirkt, aber ich kann man mir vorstellen, dass es Leuten so geht. Ich finde, die Briten verwenden einen größeren Wortschatz als die Amerikaner, das finde ich cool. Außerdem versteht man sie grundätzlich besser als die Amis
In der Schule bringen wir den Schülern britisches Englisch bei. man muss allerdings schon froh sein, wenn sie überhaupt mal was richtig aussprechen 
New Orleans würde mich auch mal interessieren, aber alles auf einmal geht ja auch nicht

Wir haben auch BE gelernt in der Schule. Kann mir sowieso gar nicht vorstellen diese ganze amerikanische Umgangssprache in der Schule zu lernen. Ich mein da ist ja "I'm", "it's" und "don't" schon das höchste der Gefühle.
Es gab ne Aktion vom DAAD ([link] ) mit nem North America Job-Pool und Stipendien für Teilnehmer. Ich hatte Glück und hab eins bekommen (vermutlich weil sich alle für Californien und New York beworben haben und ich dann wohl der einzige in Louisiana war

na ja, umsprachliches Amerikanisch dürfen wir in der Schule sowieso nicht sprechen, es geht eher um den Akzent, mit dem wir sprechen und viele sprechen da eben amerikanisches Englisch. Grundsätzlich bleibt es dir selbst überlassen, wie du sprichst, allerdings ist es irgendwie komisch, wenn du den Schülern BE beibringen sollst, aber A sprichst
Cool, ich hätte auch gerne mal im englischsprachigen Ausland gejobbt, aber irgendwie hat es sich nicht ergeben
