Description Some nebula painting practice. It has been so long since the last one that I had to go through a trial and error phase again. But I think eventually it turned out to be my best one so far in terms of realism at least. I hope you agree.

Thanks to Dagohbert for the asteroids, and wolfworx for a cloud texture.

Superfaszinierend

ErikShoemaker In reply to kuschelirmel [2016-04-17 15:20:16 +0000 UTC]

for sure a great pratice work and the section Steps....is fun look the steps.
I like those trails even because they help to create depth

Personally i don't like that acid yellowish green but this is a personal taste. Probably i don't like me because don't remember something relative to the space....but probably there is even too much saturation. Personally, talking always about tones, i love more the first or second step but less saturated erikshoemaker.deviantart.com/a…
Personally my vision of tones relative to space, is more close to this ------> erikshoemaker.deviantart.com/a… but with the space more dark....and where that red so brilliant and also saturated in that case create an excellent contrast...and i love works where there are  great visual contrasts. I mean that when in space there are multiple tone colors is hard keep own the focus active....well in few words in my opion, multiple colors create too much visual distractions. MY personal vision of the space is: dark + 1 or 2 colors. Well when the focus goes immediately on the subject in this case the planet erikshoemaker.deviantart.com/a… and there is an excellent contrast between dark and light for me is the best and it is even eleganct.

apart this that section with the sun and asteroids works good. that planet on the left and that sort of satellite on the right, with the same size and on the same plane...in my opinion don't help to create a feeling sensation of magnificence.

my fav work of this gallery in absolute is this -----> erikshoemaker.deviantart.com/a… because all is well balanced and seem to be into the scene.

I never tried to create a real work about space with a great visual of depth. first or after id like try to see.

ErikShoemaker In reply to DraakeT [2016-03-20 17:21:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the critique and the compliments about my other works.

I understand the point and I can imagine that the colors may look oversaturated on some screens. For me, the colors are what this piece is about and what makes it special, so I absolutely wouldn't want to change them. The green/yellow seems to be polarizing a lot, though.

I agree about the scales of the objects, and it was difficult at some point to show some perspective. The space station is supposedly much closer to the viewer than the planet but without haze and fog in space it is difficult to emphasize distances. Definitely a problem of this work.

Although I'm often not specially attracted to space art, I really love how in most of your space pieces there is some strong storytelling element, plus the usual insane level of detail. Also was very interesting to see the build up on repeat for a bit, it was great to see how you mainly work the soft contrasts/edges first then add most of the hard ones more towards the end with details to add depth and realism. Never really stopped to look at how space art is made before, so here's a first, was enticing.

haha, I appreciate it! Well I'm not the expert painter, so there are most likely better or more efficient ways of doing it. I just thought it could be interesting to see how it evolved, especially since the first sketch is quite horrible. Thank you Rogerio!
