Awesome! You put my knotwork stuff to shame, this is so incredible and delicate. I do okay with it but don't think I've ever done anything this massive yet this complex and delicate. I go small and detailed or lagrger and simpler, you've done something amazing... and traditional, copying that sort of manuscript brings back the times they were made!

I don't know why, but sometimes, I love to feel myself lost in massive knot... & then I start to reproduce page like this one.
But it's long...
Now, I want to learn to put traditionnal colour, I definitively dream to do a celtic page on parchment with pigments.
Crazy dream in fact...

Ooh that would be so great! I have some, both pigments and parchment, it's one of my long term goals too to do a Celtic page on parchment with pigments.

Where I got the stuff: The Society for Creative Anachronism has an annual nationwide event in Pennsylvania in August. The Pennsic War is the largest interkingdom event and the camp opens up a week before the tournaments and merchant booths do, so there's a week of lazing around meeting people, hanging out, doing art or whatever you like and then great festivities.

It's a lot like a medieval fair. Not like a Renfaire, everyone's there in persona and living in the middle ages, leaving out things like plague and witch burning because it just isn't fun. The Middle Ages as they should have been -- the cool stuff -- the stuff. It helps to save up about a thousand dollars in spending money before the event because the merchants are incredible. When I went, two or three different merchants had real parchment and several had pigments. I have a complete set of pigments I bought, plus glass muller and dish to grind them, plus I got an undersize slightly damaged skin for $200 on sale. Parchment runs high. It's more like $400 for a full skin without any damage, but I didn't worry about the damage since it was off to the side. A skin is large -- depending on the size of your projects you'd at least get half a dozen pages out of a skin or maybe more. Several vendors also had small pieces sized for miniatures cut out of the sides of skins for $5 apiece for practice pieces. I got some of those the first year in order to try it and the second time I went, I got the skin.

You can get just about anything medieval and authentic at the Pennsic War. Another cool thing about it is that all week long on the week of the main event, a huge row of tents opens up for free classes on any medieval arts you're remotely interested in, three to six tracks. You can volunteer to teach one (You are that good.) and attend any others that interest you. I have trouble hiking around the site because I do have mobility limits, so the way I spent most of the two Pennsics that I went to was alternately rambling through the merchant booths or signing up for classes and then partying all night in friends' camps.

It's a lot of fun. It takes some preplanning -- there's a discount preregistration if you get it in before January, which is a bit tight -- but it's well worth it and it is a way to get the parchment and pigments you need for that project. I'm not going this year but I might go next time, depends on my health, finances etc. including how I'd get there.

I'm living in France, & I just can't afford a travel to the USA...
I'm a student. There is nothing like that in my my country (I mean as big) but there sometime small medieval fair.
The fact is I know good illuminators, & some who lives with this art. A friend sent me parchment & she will send me natural pigments.
I just need to take the time to meet them & learn what I can, but calligraphy slows down me (but it's not a problem cause I consider myself more as a calligrapher than an illuminator ).
Nevertheless, I admit that such event is a wonderful think ! I really envy you to go there.

Oh that is so wonderful! I wish I could go to France, can't afford to. But I know the Society for Creative Anachronism has a large European branch, I'm not sure how much of it is in France but I would think a fair amount given French history and culture. If you check the website for the closest location to yours, I'm pretty sure there is a group. Drachenwald is the Kingdom that when I was in years ago was all the European clubs combined, but it may have hived if the Society grew too much and had enough people to do multiple Kingdoms. The USA is a patchwork of ever smaller Kingdoms as the club grows.

I hope that you can find your local group and that it's a good group. I know there are European events, though nothing quite on a par with the Pennsic War for size. It really is spectacular and if you ever got to have a vacation in the US would be a great way to spend it. I'm so glad you were able to get parchment and pigments to practice this ancient art.

I'm a better illuminator than calligrapher but I'm learning. I'll get to the point where it's good in a few years, especially if I get any of my health back and get involved in the SCA again.

It was a gift in fact, & I didn't take the time to scan it, so my friend took this photo & she didn't dare to remove the glass frame.
It took me one month to do that, but I spent all my time with it.

ERRANCE!!! ! So good to see you again. is this why you have been gone so long? I was wondering what happened to you. I love your work. It's a lost art that needs to be held on to and cherished! You have the ability and talent to keep it going. EXCELLENT!

In fact, it's an old work, one year old. I give it to a beloved friend, as a very personnal gift (I put a whole part of my life in it, a full month, & all the time I can in this month, until my hand became painfull). So no one see it for one year, but now, I ask permission & then, here it is.

I just have a lot of things to do, & I'm was annoyed by DA, so I disappear... the summer was difficult & September awful.
Bahhh... I'm now trying to finish another Lindisfarne page.

Errance In reply to Starless-Moonlight [2005-09-29 20:43:30 +0000 UTC]
