Description Dragon Ball Z Vegeta (2009). Painted work based on a very old sketch drawn when I was a kid. This piece is very sentimental to me as it spans over an extremely long period of time and was one of my favourite sketches when I was growing up.

Felt really inspired so started this piece at about 1am and worked all through till morning.

Painted entirely on Paint.NET with layers.

You can see a copy of the original uncoloured work HERE
for those that are interested.

Thoughts, tips, advice and comments appreciated.

Personally I never really understood the entire DBZ thing. It always looked like they were wearing socks to me, and they always looked like people with Downs Syndrom. (Just my opinion on the anamie)

On your art:

You are getting MUCH better with coloring. Your shading has improved so much since your earlier work. I am very happy to see you progress so quickly. Your light source is very consistant. The only thing I think this is missing is a cast shadow on the ground. Other then that this piece is GREAT!

You are learning layers... and layers are a GREAT tool. See if paint.net lets you change the layer type. If you can Change your layer to Overlay, then you can paint one color directly on top of another. Also look for A dodge, and Burn tool. Dodge will lighten the color slightly, and burn will darken a color slightly.... GREAT for shading.

Dragon Ball Z is probably one of the greatest, if not the greatest anime ever made Some of the artwork was pretty bad early on in the series but it got really good towards the end.

I still haven't figured out how best to make or use backgrounds and shadows. I've decided to keep all my work on a white backdrop for the time being.

yes there is Color Dodge, Color Burn and all those other settings/options that you mentioned. They are very nice Thanks for pointing that out to me

What I usually do is load my line drawing, and put that on its own layer. Then set that layer to multiply, so you can see under it. I then create a layer under it, and fill it with some sort of neutral gray color... I then use a large soft brush and just splotch darker places of gray in random places.

I then go into filters and look under Noise, and select "add noise". This covers that layer in what looks like static... so I move the slide bar to a reasonable level.

Then I go BACK to filters and look under Blur, and choose Gausan Blur. And move the slide bar to a reasonable tone...

this takes all the tones of gray that you have made, and mixes them so you have a soft neutral gray that looks more like a shet of paper. Depending on the shade of gray you use, and the amount of Noise you add depends on the texture of the paper.

Make sure that the Opacity of your brush is some what low when you splotch your gray so you can go over and over and have smooth strokes.

Thanks for the very helpful tips and hints. Its very detailed

I've tried doing what you said but I don't think I quite gasp it just yet. I think I may have to play with it some more to get a better understanding of how to use it properly
