Description Taken in the main street of Tilba, a country town in New South Wales, Australia.

I originally took this photo because I was drawn to the contrasting colours of these two buildings side by side.... and loved the verandah in between with that nice shadow running right down the middle.

Although I'm not 100% happy with the final product. Because the shadow was in the middle and there was an even amount of space between the white stair pole and the two buildings, I wanted to take a symmetrical shot. Sadly it doesn't look too balanced due to all the extra elements on the right hand side - there's more windows on the aqua building, there's a blue shed up the back, the tree is mostly on that side, and there's a set of steps on the right hand side of the veradah.

I guess sometimes I get too wound up in the moment to fully think through the actual photograph. Ah well, maybe next time.

oh my gosh youve been to tilba?!?!

i live near there!

in merimbula...!

>.> so its like an hours drive to tilba... but its still in the local area... lol

awesome shot!

as you said it doesnt look as balanced as it should...

maybe cutting off the wood at the bottom (the horizontal stuff) would make it seem more balanced?

it sort of curves... i think that may be what is making it a leetal off...

its ok about the symmetry thing though, sometimes it is more interesting when the image is not that "perfect", imperfection can make it more fun

I totally agree - that's the thing though, I think the symmetry here makes this picture too 'perfect' and it seems to have less spunk or attitude to my normal works.

I'm told I'm too self-critical

wow that's really cool. the only thing i would criticize is the textureless clouds... i love the 'zoom' effect this has.

OMG i love this photo! congratulations... the colours are so vivid, the sky seems fake for its perfection and the lines and the prospective make the whole work intense and powerful. Absolut fav for me!

Wow, a delicious photograph in so many ways! First of all the colour is just divine, you do seem to have a lot of colourful buildings in Australia don't you! I'm most envious. Not to mention the colour of the sky. Secondly, the linear qualities are just, well, all over the photo really between the decking and the buildings they just suck you into their amazing little linear world that seems to disappear off into yonder bushes. I love it.

It's so funny that this is the most popular photograph in my gallery.... and I don't even like it much. haha I do love the linear qualities though, for the reasons you said.
We don't have that many colourful buildings, you just have to look in the right places. Alot of places seem to be re-painting everything bright and vibrant these days.... mostly houses but there's also some retail chains with really intense walls (Ikea, Straithfield Car Radio, Officeworks.... and other things)
They make for good photographs

Nice Lines! I prefer photographers who make art out of their surroundings instead of those who drag a half naked goth into a studio and cover her in tomato sauce and call it art. the lines, the three bands of colour, it works so well!

I love this shot and I had to instantly fave it as it impacted on me the moment I saw it... and for that moment I stopped breathing Sounds dramatic I know, but, any kind of "great" art impacts on the physical too, right?

I love, love, love and my eye balls are dragged right through the centre of this shot..I love all the lines, the colour, the cute little clouds Its just so AUSTRALIAN!

I think you're too hard on yourself. Dont forget to look at the "whole" Wholistically this shot has massive impact

etc-etc-etc In reply to Aquiel [2005-01-26 06:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Ahh well thankyou Karen, what a compliment! I agree, it is very Australian looking

I think it's cool having those horizontal boards in the foreground.... your eyes are lead all around the shot by the directing lines on the building and the main part of the floor.... but those boards down the front stop us from really 'stepping in' to the photograph - like a secret little barrier.

I probably am too hard on myself sometimes, or at least too hard on my photos! I was actually coming on here today to scrap this, only to find that people seemed to really be liking it - so I guess I should give it a chance hehe.

Thanks for the favourite

Ah, here's your strong sense of perspective coming through again

i think perfectly symmetrical photos are over-rated I love the contrast in colours between the aqua building and the orange one. THe lighting is great too. Especially on the orange building - the lighting on it is just fantastic *stares* The colours in it... it's not just orange. It has all these other shades that make it really interesting.

Lines are another strong element in this photo. There's all the lines of perspective on the buildings and the floor then there's some horizontal lines in the foreground and then in the background you have the more natural shapes of the clouds and trees. I really like this one

I love the orange/aqua contrast too.... it's what drew me to take this shot. That and those horizontal boards down at the front.... I like the sudden change it direction - looks really interesting

I'm glad you like this one Luke and thanks for the favourite!

Very nice, I like this a lot!
I like that it's not symmetrical, i think it works really well..
The sky looks really stunning, the gradient.. and the clouds look amazingly white.
Great work!

Yeah, it's really nice to get a couple of hours away from the city.... the sky is just so much more blue and clear, the airs fresher.... it's lovely

RomanCandidate [2005-01-25 15:18:58 +0000 UTC]

Personally, I think the composition on this is very good - I like the perspective and the angle on it and I don't really find the extra stuff that distracting (well, maybe the bushes, but that's the not first thing that strikes me). It would be pretty boring if it was completely symmetrical. I also like the colours as well.

My only real gripe about this is the cloud - there's a loss of detail on that (overblown highlights and a lack of detail on the midtone). Otherwise, I like this.

Yeah, I wish there was a little more definition on it, or some more clouds in the sky to create a little more interest. Thanks for the favourite

sti-pop [2005-01-25 14:23:03 +0000 UTC]

It might not be technically perfect, but your idea was conveyed wonderfully. Besides, I think the aqua building needed the extra elements, the orange building would probably overpower it without them. I really love this shot.

etc-etc-etc In reply to sti-pop [2005-01-26 06:20:06 +0000 UTC]

Ah yeah, you're probably right about that now I look at it more closely. The orange is a more dominant colour. Thanks for pointing that out
