Technically since Chaos energy was sucked out of the universe I guess Shadow doesn't really need the rings, so that gesture would have been more sentimental than anything. Being around Sonic probably gives him some minor spillover of the energy, but I'm sure it's nowhere near fatal. Once all the Emeralds are restored he might need those back again, though.

I think the rings are just power regulators. He should be fine as long as he doesn't go crazy with the Chaos Control and overload himself.
