It's not that but rather Sonic is his friend and they've been for years. He probably felt obligated at first and he might feel obligated again but he just found his friends as stone statues and lost he motivation, Silver and the others he's only known for a few days maybe weeks, Sonic have been with him for years and they have been together for so long they act like a married couple but they just really close (bromance if you want Google it if you must) any what I'm is chill, this is platonic till Evanstanley says otherwise

Good question! I'll lay it out 'cause it's way too complicated and and I'm afraid it won't be covered as well as it should be in-comic.

When the original Sonic was turned into Metal Sonic, he was cut off from the Emeralds and bound to a Chaos Drive; he's a battery with a personality. Being installed into Metal Sonic was so confusing and difficult because Metal Sonic wasn't a blank slate; Metal was once a person in his own right, and though his computer system's higher functioned were destroyed he retained all his memories, and made new ones over the years in storage. The Sonic in the Chaos Drive gained all the memories and notions that Metal Sonic held, and had to rationalize them against his own perspective. This melding of beings, the ghost and the robot, has pretty much made him into a new person. While he still remembers being Sonic and cares about a lot of the same stuff, he has a certain emotional separation from it; his life is what's happening right now. Seeing the new Spirit Sonic also made him realize that they're both copies of the true, living Sonic who died so that they could be created. The only thing that kept him sane were Metal's memories of Sicily slowly repairing him, and talking to the robot as a friend and confidant. That's why he's so dedicated to her. He does still care about saving the universe of course, but he's accepted that he's got a different role to play now.

Sonic's spirit is part of Chaos Energy; the Chaos Emeralds are the closest thing he's got to a real body. That's why when he gets hurt or tired enough, he just poofs into whatever Emerald is near. So when the first Spirit Sonic was cut off and changed beyond recovery, everything that makes Sonic "Sonic" was still safe in the Emeralds, waiting to be called on. When Silver was in danger and called out to Sonic for help, The Emeralds produced a new manifestation of Sonic because naturally he'll come to help his friends whenever he can. Theoretically, Spirit Sonic could manifest an infinite number of copies and be anywhere and everywhere at once, but it intensely goes against his beliefs and sense of identity; he wouldn't even consider it, so he can't consciously do it. Just the suggestion of being a copy in the first place is incredibly horrifying to him.

All this stuff is technically in-comic right now, but it's peppered throughout the rest of the story and hasn't been tied together yet.

He did, but there's another Sonic that's running around, and it seems that whatever's in Metal Sonic doesn't identify as Sonic anymore.

Oh no, I get that. Eggman/Gun/Nicole totally set off the events of the plot but it also makes sense that after all of these years together they would develop a friendship and not just a 'i'm only doing this purely out of guilt' thing--otherwise the mention of Silver would have provoked a similar reaction, showing that he cares about the mission not someone he would see as a close and sadly only good friend.
