If I'm remembering correctly Nicole used Sonic to create a consciousness for Metal Sonic to operate. But since Sonic is the chaos emerald guardian he basically reformed from an emerald Silver had at the time. So technically there are two Sonics, the one currently taking a rest inside the emerald, and the one inside Metal Sonic
