Ghosts of the Future, Issue 16 page 6.I wrote a lil thing on Patreon for this, so I'm gonna copy it over:
Ooh, here's Sonic's monologue. This page, and the idea it conveys, was pretty much the reason this story happened despite not being directly related to the overarching plot. It's very important to the kind of person Sonic is, and in the future, the ideals he's struggling to live up to. Also, it's a HUGE turning point for how Shadow sees the world, though it'll take him another couple centuries to really embody it.
Okida : Does this make Sonic the ghost of Día de Muertos past?
Evan: You will be visited by one ghost, because YOU HURT HIS FEELINGS

It's interesting to see Shadow having remorse and mourning over what happened. He's always tough and ignoring what happened. Now this flashback shows that at one point he did have a mourning period. A depression he went through before he became what he is.

It was based on the idea of the moment on this page, actually! the second half of the issue came about later, and it's kind of an epilogue to this flashback scene.

Well, it's as they say: everything great starts small and, in this case, Sonic telling Shadow to live life essentially and celebrate it.
So, I'm assuming that this issue will wrap up our flashbacks for good?

This'll wrap up the Sonic and Shadow backstory flashbacks, but there miiight be one more section that gets flashbacks. Okida and I haven't scripted that bit out yet.

Augh. Sonic and Shadz' expressions are amazing. I especially like Sonic's in the first panel and Shadow's in the last.
On another note, I absolutely adore the way you ink and colour your ghosts. Where the inking is partially the actual the light shading, their base colour, and regular old black. How do you do that? I tried to do something similar with one of my recent pictures. Though I really like how it turned out, it didn't get that 'ghost-y' feeling you do so well.

My main trick is for vibrant, luminous ghosts you gotta offset the opacity of the base colors with an aura layer that keeps the area around them brighter (without destroying background detail), and emphasizing highlights so you don't lose the illusion of form.
Planning out the background details ahead of time so you know what'll be behind your ghost helps a ton; like on this page, Sonic isn't actually transparent in panel 3, but it looks like he is 'cause of the little bit of information of the doorframe overlapping his hand. With actual transparency, knowing what's behind your character will also sell it much more easily. If your illustration doesn't have/need a background, try putting in an abstract pattern behind them, a non-transparent prop for them to hold, or have their own body overlapping in the pose.
On a very transparent character, I'll only paint on the highlights and bounce lights; this creates a glass-like effect. Paired with an airbrushed in, colored aura set below the character on Overlay or Hard Light mode you can get a thoroughly transparent ghost without sacrificing readability and color saturation. Coloring the outlines to be a very dark tone of the aura color helps too, but depending on the desired look it's not essential. Hope that helps!

Do you directly paint over your sketch and then add in the linework if needed? Or do you use a linework layer first to get the base colours then edit it later on?

I do my lineart first, and most of the other layers go under it-- there should be a screenshot of the layer order in the process thingie. You could totally do it with flats first then add lineart just where it's needed, though, if that's your desired look.

I love seeing Sonic in this light in fanworks, as it is very rarely seen in the games' canon.
I love writers who show how caring Sonic really is as opposed to a certain other "professional" writer who just thinks Sonic is "all attitude"
