Here's a question, do I need to read Sonic the Comic to understand Okida's continuation of it, or can I just go over and start reading that continuation and be fine? Because I do want to read that continuation so I'm ready for this arc, but I'm not sure if I want to read all of Sonic the Comic or even where I'd read it for the entire thing.

Reading Sonic the Comic and Okida's continuation of it isn't essential to understanding and enjoying the story; STC characters will have description and exposition. Like Scourge in the last arc, it's a GOTF story with guest stars from another universe. A casual familiarity with STC's differences is more than enough. That being said, it'll be WAY more fun if you know the STC universe well, so if you've been holding off on jumping into it now's a great time! Also, this story will have lasting effects on not only GOTF but also Okida's STC, so reading both will be worthwhile in the long run. Neither of us favor crossovers that end by pushing the "reset" button.
