Okay, since no one on here actually knows Sam's story, I'll explain a couple things. Sam lives with his actual parents until they go through some hard times, run out of money, and can't take care of him. Sam's dad also can't afford medication to treat his schizophrenia by that point, and ends up dumping him in the middle of a forest instead of taking him to the adoption agency because of a paranoid episode. At that point, Sam is six, and his gay adoptive parents find him starving and screaming in the forest. So he gets a little mentally warped after that. When he's 21, Mute pushes him out of the way of a speeding truck, and gets crushed. After that, Sam gets some TV publicity, is reunited with his birth parents, and gets medication. He keeps Mute's tie. So by the time he's 25, he's a totally different person, and he's a lot more stable.
