Description
Well.. here's where I am so far. It isn't that far of an advance since I've been pretty busy lately. I cleaned up some details on her face, and added in some shoulders. Hopefully her pose is becoming a little more clear.[Shall be scrapped when the finished pieces is up.]

hai hai! I'll try to put in some ambient light.. I'm not really sure where I'm gonna put it though. This whole realism concept is killing my brain cells.

Still lookin' good!
I was just thinking that it might look great if you left out any sort of clothing (Ie: top straps), and just left the nakie-looking shoulders out in the open. Hopefully something fills that little bit of void to the right there... even if it was a the tiniest tuft of brown hair just to balance things out.
I think you're doing a bang up job though!

it's funny, because I *was* gonna put top straps in there.. but yeah, that's a good idea. I don't really know what else to do with her shoulders except refine the shadows :/

She does! For her A-Museum Tour, her first outfit was this weird black poofy dress with tubes of lights all over it, and it wrapped about her shoulders and over her head like a giant cage. She had to move like a marionette.. haha

This is coming along quite well, I am impressed with how fast you're getting the hang of this new style. Since last time my praise was not enough for you, here's somethings that I noticed. First, I am not sure what look you're trying to grasp here but I think that sharper lines in certain areas would do you some good. Also, I would like to point out that in certain areas the color differences are a little to harsh so I see more of a bruised look than shadows. Still, don't get me wrong, I like this piece a lot and you're progressing really well... those are just some thoughts I had.

Take a bow, take a bow.
Ah yes.. I've noticed the dirtyish look. I can't really fix it either, so I'm just gonna paint the nose again. I thought I would try for a blurred-photo look, but I'm not so sure now... Thanks for the tips and ideas! You know I love it when you leave long messages like these for me.

i love the eyes still Well... so far the only critique I can give is the 'cleaning out' part... but I can't say that right now since it's an in progress work. So I'll sit back and watch while you work your magic

I'm slowly learning all the mistakes that I shouldn't be making... it's like, "OMG, what the hell was I doing?! I should know better than this, I used to USE PS for everything! ..... -_-* "
Yeah.. I really need to clean up the areas better. I hate it when I don't intend for things to become deviations, but then they do, and I gotta go back and clean up the messiness... doh.
Thanks Joyce!

*sigh* Fine. But you're just gonna say it isn't done.
The edges need to be smoother/sharper. It's a really common issue for people who paint in Photoshop. It's easy to fix, just get the pen tool out, run a straight curve, make it into a selection and delete the excess or use it as a mask. Just need to be cleaned, not really a biggy.
Err, some of the shadows are too dark, and gives it more of a dirt look then a shadow...I do that too when I do PS painting. Also simple correction...don't use black when painting shadows, unless you're doing like a cartoon. Black isn't in nature. Sample the skin color and drop the brightness a bit and use THAT as your shadow. The spots I notice are around the left (her right) nostral and in the neck. You could just lighten the opacity of those shadows...up to you. It still looks the tiniest bit flat, overall....work with the shading/highlights and it'll be perfect.
That better?

exdevlin In reply to iAmNerdgod [2005-05-27 16:42:31 +0000 UTC]
Much better. *decisive nod*
I know the edge along her jaw is pretty jumpy, I really should fix that first. I generally don't use pure black for shadows.. I think the only spot I used something close to black was her lashes, and that was for emphasis. Mascara and eyeliner will do that.. -_-. I also took these colors from a photo.. so that's probably one reason there. ><. Got any tips on blending colors? I haven't a clue how to do it well. I'm also having (obvious) issues with differently colored shadows. Grar. Thanks for the pointers. Keep up the pickiness, I like to hear people being picky, unless they're picking on really REALLY Stupid things.

iAmNerdgod In reply to exdevlin [2005-05-27 17:08:33 +0000 UTC]
Blending?
Well, myself, I do things the hard way. I take a brush and make the painting opacity really low, like 10-20% and just paint on the shadows like that. Gradually it gets darker as you start working the fall-off. And since you have the opacity so low, you have a lot of "steps" so the blending looks smoother because it's harder to see the edges.
There's lots of ways...as is anything in photoshop. You could, say, use a seperate layer for shadows and mask THAT layer with some sort of gradient to blend a color/shadow...but that seems like it would be more work.

exdevlin In reply to iAmNerdgod [2005-05-27 19:27:21 +0000 UTC]
No it doesn't... it teaches you how to blend properly. I'm used to relying on pen sensitivity, but I guess in PS, you have to keep altering your opacity all the time.. forgot about that too, because I was too lazy.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
iAmNerdgod In reply to exdevlin [2005-05-27 19:36:25 +0000 UTC]
Photoshop lets you use pen sensitivity as well. You just have to use the brush editor--and you can control a lot of different things.
