Description Rendered using Pixar's Renderman. I pretty much completed the model. I'm doing small tasks fixing minor texture issues.

The fur looks better on the head. For whatever reason the fur on the body looks flatter and more glossy. Might just be me. Anyway, great work as always

I see, I think its mostly a lighting problem. I've taken down the shinnyness of the arms and body of the character, I will post an update soon.

How'd you sign up for Renderman? When I try, it tells me that there's always an invalid password.

I registered months before it came out so I could be kept up to date with the release. If there is a problem with the login that's an issue with the site or your browser. Contact an admin, hope you fix the issue.

Not the login, the actual sign up. But I guess I'll have to contact them.Β

Give it a shot, I will warn you there is a learning curve. I spent a couple of days messing around and learning how to get better results. Let me know if you need to know anything. They have tutorials but they don't cover everything you need to know.

When I'm looking at choosing a renderer, Renderman doesn't even show up. Am I looking in the wrong place? I'm using the default renderer chooser.

You have to look at the installation video, I don't remember if there is something you have to change or add to the maya file. I remember it not showing up on mines but that was because the plugin wasn't checked. So you have to also manually enable your plugin and autoload it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nobody661 In reply to ezraprogrammer [2015-05-23 23:18:10 +0000 UTC]

There's an installation video?

Also I don't know how to use Maya, so please explain a bit more! (I use Blender, which is radically different from most 3D modelling programs)

ezraprogrammer In reply to nobody661 [2015-05-24 02:17:41 +0000 UTC]

What the? Well you have a long road ahead of you. I'm not sure if it was an installation video or a readme file. I know that when you download it there are some good forum posts and some getting started videos available.
When you install a plugin in Maya you have to tell Maya to Load and Autoload the plugin. You do this by going to window/settingPreferences/PluginManager
Now find the RendermanForMaya Plugin and check both boxes. Close Maya and open it, it should Auto load it and your good to go.

Hmm...I'm not sure. It looks good but I don't know...I think Sonic looks too smooth and his chest and arms look like plastic.

(Reads the description)

Oh...well okay then! I think if Sonic's fur looked bit more like fur, like how some people do when they make him more realistic it'd be fine.

I noticed that as well, it cannot be seen in a brighter light. I could turn down the clear coat, even though I like to think he gets sweaty from running around all day. I know those mammals only sweat from their nose and paws but they don't walk and talk either. I think i'll dial that back a bit, thanks.

BUGHS-22 [2015-05-20 12:13:11 +0000 UTC]

I would recomend fixing neck shape and that attaching to the body. It is too narrow and the neck is there in "V" shape but it would look better in "A" shape. For example like here

Anyway I really like the fur texture and the eyes how the pupils look natural from side view. that amazed me the most.

So it seems you were right, now I have a more hour glass look to it, not a total A shape but definitely not a V. I'm uploading the update on facebook check it out www.facebook.com/mobiustheanimatedseries
Thanks for the help!

Number one thing I look at when having someone raging off on their keyboard is their portfolio. I consider a persons opinion to have more value when they can do or do better than you have. Being critiqued by my peers rather than people with keyboards.

So if someone expresses that Sonic should have no neck, I tell them I like the neck and I'm keeping it I would consider otherwise if a huge amount of people tell me the same. But if one personΒ from 3D animation studio contacts me and tells me something is wrong with my topology, I stop listen and try to work around it.

I see a lot of people get into heated battles withΒ others for no reason. The point of the style of characters I'm making is uniform, I never liked that all the characters didn't follow the same rules and some have connected eyes and some didn't, Sonic has a well rounded head and everyone else has a longer snout. So that's what I'm going for, there are multiple pics of Sonic and Sally together to demonstrate that point on my facebook page.

Recently I read about the creator of Dragon Ball Absolon having a meltdown because of negative comments and trolling. I think having a system whereΒ a personsΒ comments are worth something would have helped, you can't please everyone and everyones not worth pleasing. In the end if its too different then its more original and I call that a win. That's just a piece of how my mind works

You mean renderwise or topology? I want this to be a dark series. I'm aiming for slight cartoon proportions not too much and not too realistic, for instance the fur textures only become visible from a certain distance because the bump map is set extremely low, which I like.

I could take down the bump texture a bit. I didn't add a sneaker texture but I may use something procedural.
I played with the anatomy a lot, I like Sonics old anatomy its great for certain poses but when animating him doing something as simple as scratching the top of his head the limitations became apparent. I would like my character to have more freedom and with big clunky hands and giant feet it makes it harder to pull off anything without geometry penetration, that's what I learned from working on the sonic fan film. Actually working on the Sonic Fan Film reinforced my vision of Sonic without the limitations. There are methods like squash and stretch that can take care of these problems but then camera angles can make it look really goofy, especially if you can tell one arm is longer than the other at certain points. Its one of those cases where its easily done in 2D but in 3D its hell.

But the bland look on his face is mostly because I haveΒ yet to apply any expression or blendshapes in this case, I justΒ didn't get around to it yet. I doΒ have to get to that point cause it looks so boring without an expression/emotion. I may adjust his body like shoulder width a bit more when I start to rig. I chose the A position because it works much better than the T pose and requires much less weight painting.
Thanks for your input. Its so much back and forth and what helps a lot is having both characters on the same workspace so I can match them up pretty close.

Thanks. I had a hard time with the neck. its weird cause I want it Straight or A shape but I also want it to flow into the head shape and that's what forces theΒ V shape. Sonic has a big head compared to his body and I didn't want a sharp transition from his neck to his head. I can't remember if I overlooked it or I decided to keep it the way it is but I'm going to do a little poly pushing and pulling to see what I come up with. But if I do decide to keep as it I really don't mind it. Thanks again.
