Description
I've kept a dream diary for the last few years, and every once and a while I have a truly bizarre and surreal dream, so much so that I need to purge/process it by getting it out of me and on a piece of paper. this was the result from one of those.(also later inspired an even weirder short story about a one-eyed wordsmith, which might make an appearance later in life)
micron & stabilo pens
as always, love to hear what you think about this (odd) drawing xoΒ

Hi, I found your deviation through ,
Wow, this is a very interesting piece! That must have been quite the dream. The eyes seem to glare as though accusing the view of something, or perhaps it is a warning not to expect to get away with misdeeds.Β
The colors shooting from the eyes (or it could be that the eyes are being shot up by a jet of color for that matter) combine well with the blank and white of the rest of the eye. I think part of what makes this work well is that some of the color is coming out of the pupils plus you put a lot of detail into the eyes themselves. It stArts to get a 3D effect, and that definitely adds to the surrealism. It is interesting that there is a variation in the colors; some are hot and some are cold and the color jet in the middle ties them together, which is a nice touch because it suggests that your coloration was intentional and purposeful rather than random. It seems to me like that variation is going with that warning or accusatory look of the eyes. No matter the situation and no master the season, we see you, they seem to say. In fact, the pencils coming out of the eyes combined with the color make me feel like those eyes can draw or paint whatever happened to make them glare so accusingly. It is a haunting and chilling tougher! The details you put into the eyes also add to the piercing, all seeing quality, and those details also tell the observer that you know your eye anatomy well.Β
There red are a few things that, you might consider for future works, and here they are: The main point I think you should try for next time is to achieve the same approaching 3D effect you got with the eyes. The pencils look much flatter compared to the rest of the image as they are now. The other thing I would suggest is to add a background. This isn't necessarily a criticism, but with surreal drawings like this, it can help set the mood or tell your viewers more about the dream. Right now it feels more like a tattoo design, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, with no background, we can only rely on the eyes themselves for interpretation. If this was what you were going for, you got it! All in all, it is really neat. It was definitely worth looking at.

Hello ! member here !Β
Freud would be quite happy with your piece, I am sure of it. Are you feeling observed or anything ? Because these look quite judgmental to me.
Let's look at the good things !
- Your eyes are very detailed and realistic : you have mastered the art of creating eyes, that's a fact. They look very realistic, even if you depicted in a very stylized way, with black lines. It creates what I call a "tattoo effect" since your lines are really smooth. This tattoo effect allows you to show the variations of the iris, without any colour. Moreover, the lines in the white of the eye make me wonder : where you hypnotized in your dream ? These lines make me think of a prison where your eye is deprived (is that the right word ?) of reality.Β
- I like the piece's composition : the three eyes look like inquisitors' eyes, aimed at every direction, looking for every little mistake they may find. I also find it quite interesting that the one in the middle is bigger than the others. It creates a 3D effect, and the piece looks even more like a statue, or like a spectre. I feel as if they were able to fly from a place to another. It looks like a creature, in the end.
Now, the points to improve !
- The pencils don't seem to be aligned with the colourful cones. It gives a very confusing feeling : as if the symmetry wasn't respected. Was it like this in your dream ? If not, then it would be better to align all the elements, to create some sort of harmony. Moreover, the piercing eyes and pencils would be even more powerful like this, because they would be supported by the back cones.
- The pencils are flat, and lack 3D effects : the whole piece is built on a 3D effect, so the flat pencils look very odd here. Try to create a cylinder to depict the pencils. You can thus use your strokes to shade the round shape and thus to reinforce the idea of cylinder. Like this : www.drawinghowtodraw.com/stepb⦠. You can check out this video (and channel !) to know more about cross-hatching : www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIIpEu⦠;
Side note and suggestion : A background to set the piece (even in a surreal environnement) would have been nice. It is not an obliged thing, because your piece works quite well like this, but a background would add more tension to the piece, and could also highlight the creature even more than a transparent bg. But, if you cannot recall what place the eyes were set in, maybe it is better not to put any. I don't know.
Overall, you did a nice piece, but you need to work with building lines to align elements. However, it stays a very interesting representation of a weird dream, and you have a great potential ! You should do a "dreamy series", depicting your dreams.
KEEP IT UP, AND HAPPY DRAWING !

Is it me, or does this image seem a bit painful? I mean, taking the line "pencils coming out of your eyeball" out of context does make you feel a little uneasy. Even so, the line here does create what I think to be very original artwork. I can definitely see that this is a conceptual piece rather than something that illustrates a scene or serves as a portrait. What really hammers in the surrealism is how the shading is done. The linear shading technique makes everything a little more geometric. It doesn't look real, but that's because it's not supposed to be real. This is based off of a dream sequence, after all. Though, I think your foreshortening could use some work. The pencils don't exactly match the direction of the colored lines, nor do they seem to pop out much from the eyeballs, or they don't have as much depth. (Except for the top right pencil) Now as for the message of this picture, I can't really say because again, this is surrealism. It's up to the viewer to determine what the message of this picture is. So from my standpoint, I'd say the image is telling us that art is first produced by thought, then perceived by sight, and then illustrated by hand or pencil, kind of like how a movie is written by a producer, supervised by a director, and carried out by the actors.

This is absolutely stunning- it's the kind of piece that makes you cringe, yet you just can't look away. At least, that's how I see it. I actually feel as if I can feel the pain of that pencil stabbing me in the eye- though part of that is probably the headache I have and the fact that I usually poke my eye trying to see if my glasses are on or not. The contrast between the colorless eyes and the tendon/nerve things that connect them so colorfully (I don't understand anatomy well, but I know eyes have those...I think they're nerves?)...It just makes it even harder not to look, because it's so strong. I kind of wish I could see the irises though, or at least that the pencils were colored. It'd be extra contrast that would probably add to the effect to me- but it's already so amazing, I can't unsee it! I'm afraid to ask what inspired you, though. Well, what could've inspired that bizarre dream.
EDIT: My dad took a look with me and he said he loves it as well- dreamscapes and such always intrigue him, especially the more bizarre ones.

Gah! Thank you for such an in-depth comment! I was definitely going for a little cringey, but not so macabre that it actively turned viewers away. I had never actually thought of the colored bits connecting the eyes as nerves, but that's a really cool interpretation! And I totally see what you mean about additional color in either the pencil or iris. At the time when I was drawing this I had really only done black&white ink drawings, with little bits of color here and there, and so I definitely didn't push myself out of my comfort zone. But if I end up revisiting this piece I might play with coloring in the pencil and see what effect that has!
Oof as for the inspiration... I'm more than a little high anxiety and for some reason I'm hyper aware of things that could a.) break a finger, b.) break a fingernail, or c.) damage my eye and so I feel like a lot of my anxiety dreams fed off of these fears.
Eek, and thank your dad for me too!!!

I know the feeling of high anxiety- I'm even diagnosed with an anxiety/panic disorder! There's nothing wrong with trying to be cautious, though. I've always had weird nightmares- but I can't say I've had one quite like this. I often have pain in my dreams though, usually from my physical pain leaking into my brain at the time. One time I had a fever dream that I was on a plain surface staring at a dark sky, with nice fluffy feathers falling down...But when they'd float onto my head, they'd feel like I was being pelted with rocks. Woke up with a screeching headache. I'll be glad I haven't hurt my eyes outside of poking them.
But it's good you did try to get out of your comfort zone in your own way. I look forward to seeing the way you use your dreams in the future, too!
