Description I know I haven't uploaded anything in quite a while, and that's mainly because I haven't done anything. At least nothing that I can or would want to show. But lately, I've been getting back into doing warmup coloring, aka just taking random sketches off the web and coloring them for the hell of it. I find that it's definitely important to do art just for fun every now and then, so that it doesn't turn into a boring job routine (which kills the motivation for me).
Also it's a great way to just try shit out and experiment. I still think I'm way too slow so I'm trying to up my speed as well, which up to now I haven't succeeded in doing (these were all between 1 and 2 hours each).

So yeah, I didn't feel like uploading every piece individually here, so I just put them all into one piece. If you want to take a look at a bigger version (which I kind of recommend since none of these have anything to do with each other, and should actually stand alone) then check this [link] .

I am forever baffled at your magic powers. What you do with colors surpasses some of the greatest people who use pencils. Seriously, if there were a book out with terrible writing and shite art, but YOU colored it. I'd still pick it up.

FabianMonk In reply to NinjaBits [2007-04-17 09:17:32 +0000 UTC]

What if I were to tell you that there will be a book with not terrible writing and definitely not shite pencils but also colored by me, would you pick that up?
Hahaha, sorry, had to run a little promotion here. Thanks for the compliments dude, much appreciated!

I honestly don't know how you do it (as far as colouring goes).
I wish I did!! I get far more frustrated colouring than I do drawing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FabianMonk In reply to zatham [2007-04-17 09:18:19 +0000 UTC]

Yah for me it was just a bunch of trial and error. If you keep practicing you'll figure it out as you go along. I find learning how to draw properly much more difficult.

Awesome variation in color and lighting style. My favorite is that pastely one down in the bottom left corner. To think you can pull that many different coloring techniques from Photoshop.... I'm starting to pick that up myself.

thelearningcurv [2007-04-17 00:54:39 +0000 UTC]

damn, all of this was done in CS? Do you use a tablet or wacom or something similar? I can never color faster than a whole day for a piece like anything you've done..... they all look like finished pieces. whats your process?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FabianMonk In reply to thelearningcurv [2007-04-17 09:27:45 +0000 UTC]

I use a Wacom Intuos 2 at home, and an Intuos 3 at the studio where I intern. And yeah, done in CS.

Here's a quick break down of the process on these:
I just set the layer with the line-art to multiply, then I dropped a solid color underneath that layer and put some very rough color washes on that same layer (underneath the lineart). Just really rough brush strokes to sort of block out shapes. Kind of like flat colors, but I didn't take the time to really give each area it's own color - that was all done really roughly just to give me an idea of what the mood could be. Then I made a new layer above the lineart and started putting in all the details and the rendering. Usually zooming in pretty close and using very small brushes. I also added a sort of grain to the images with the noise filter. On the Hulk piece I used some textures as well. And that's basically it.

thelearningcurv In reply to FabianMonk [2007-04-17 16:03:12 +0000 UTC]

i kinda figured that might be how you did it, but the first part I didn't guess with the flats under and the details over the line art..... I need to get me a tablet to color..... everything i learn i do so late it's annoying. I am trying though.....

[yea I do everything with a mouse ]

Hey can we get a higher res of the Cannon Busters stuff? I'd love to see that up closer.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FabianMonk In reply to DannyMcGillick [2007-04-17 09:23:42 +0000 UTC]

Sorry to say, I don't have any higher res version anymore. When I colored them I upped the resolution to 300 dpi, but I didn't save those versions. I just saved the final ones, which were reduced back to 72. I don't know if you checked the link in the image description, but that's the largest those pieces are.
I still have higher res of the Hulk and the Afro Samurai though (those were the last two I did, and only then did it occur to me to keep the high res), if you're interested in those I can send them your way or something.

I'd be proud to do that kind of stuff in two hours. My coloring quality is twice the time and possibly an eighth the quality. That's why I just stick with drawing.

Very cool stuff.

Glad to see you posting again! You aren't allowed to take so long in between updates. Hope all is going well with your internship. Great job on all of these! They all look great but I really dig the red and orange bg on the final image. I know it's not the main focus on the images but just makes me think everything is on fire.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FabianMonk In reply to dooters [2007-04-17 09:19:47 +0000 UTC]

Well there isn't really one true focus, none of these images are supposed to be working together, I was just too lazy to upload them individually, haha. Thanks for the comment!
