Description Alternate Title: ESDA's Techniques for Working in the Digital Field

So many people have begged me to make a backgrounds tutorial that I finally gritted my teeth and made one. This doesn't involve even half of what I do to make a digital landscape, but it should teach you how to better use the tools you have and inspire you to mess around and play with Photoshop some more. I hope you'll create your own techniques for making backgrounds, mine's are not the best nor are they the only ones.
And if it sucks when you make it the first time, try a second time. Practice makes perfect.
Cheerio!

You should have done this and told people how to do it with a mouse. This tutorial is amazing, but I don't havea tablet and I'm sure that there are many others like me.

I can safely say that even if you made a tutorial superior to this one, I would still be able to get tons of use out of this. I'm just starting to refine my backgrounds, and I really needed the ideas presented here. I actually did not know the desaturation thing with the horizon. You have saved my newest, best CG! Thank you! xD

lidiaBartlam [2008-07-12 14:23:08 +0000 UTC]

depth doesn't just mean you loose detail further to the back but it also means you loose colour intensity because of he "atmosphere perspective" people often forget, that's why I think this does look quite artificial, you do mention desaturating as you go further into he image... but maybe it should have been a little more, nevertheless this is very good, I like the clear way you explain the brushes and techniques.

This is a rather old tutorial I made while I was still starting to just grasp the techniques myself, yet people were begging me for one. So I did this to oblige them somewhat and hopefully inspire them to attempt their own backgrounds. However your critique is valid and I constantly seek improvement on my work, so thank you very much for the honest comment. I wish there were more like it on DA, so few know how to critique effectively or accurately here and even fewer realize there's more to it than pointing and yelling "THAT'S WRONG!!"

this helped tremendously i made a BG a little like this using your tut nowi cant wait to use these techniques on other kinds of backrounds its really helped before i tired using this (when i din;t haev a tablet ) it was hard but not its REALLLY easy.

but i have a Q since you have made alot of tuts is it possible you could make just ONE more (of rain effects and water like things mostly rain) the would be really nice cause that is another thing i SUCK at and your tuts are really easy to use and help me alittle more then others, thankyou

I haven't really come up with a good repeatable technique for doing water yet, but I'll consider it for the future.

I just have one question- In the part with making the grass brush, how do you open the "brush folder" and fix the opacity?

Thank you so much! My backgrounds won't look like a 3-year-old made them anymore! Yay!
By any chance, do you have any suggestions on how to do water? Or woud that take another tutorial? Or can I somehow apply this one making water?

FablePaint In reply to Crazycat856 [2008-06-12 03:47:07 +0000 UTC]

Study real water (photos are helpful) and try to work it out. I tend to do water a little different each time depending on the situation.

understand your brushes and how they affect your artwork is a fundamental part of digital painting. By manipulating them, you can make your artwork that much better (and this goes beyond making simple stamps)

ermm...may i ask?
wad kind of software did u use to make the brush on the both side 'sharp'?
my photoshop can onli make it 'sharp' at one side >.< (using 'fade' mode under control)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FablePaint In reply to RamzaWolf [2008-04-04 23:42:31 +0000 UTC]

It's probably just a setting mix-up. You likely need to replace "fade control" with "pressure control".

RamzaWolf In reply to FablePaint [2008-04-05 02:05:54 +0000 UTC]

ahh...nvm...i think i know why.
i dont have the tablet =/
i guess i'll be just using mouse with fade control^^

Amazing tutorial! I have added it to my favorites for future references.

I wish I had Photoshop, but I think I had modify some of the features just enough to work with Paintshop Pro.

Thanks so much for sharing this.

uh oh, knocking the grass bursh from photoshop might insult some people who love it, that and the auto leaf brushes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FablePaint In reply to Kuwaizair [2008-03-05 01:39:37 +0000 UTC]

If they love it, it's because they don't know there's far better alternatives out there. If you're interested in professional graphics work, using things like the default grass brush with no modification what-so-ever is a faux-pas and a sign of an amateur. Better to vary what brushes you work with to get nice, organic looking grass rather than the cloned strokes Photoshop provides.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuwaizair In reply to FablePaint [2008-03-05 01:48:26 +0000 UTC]

and burn and dodge lawls.
I use painter so everything is differnt, I use it a lot and forget i have tools like...what ever it has.
that and my photoshop is 6 and I only have the brushes it came with and the posslby 'wow' brushes. the cloest thing to grass I have looks like a feather or a puff of wheat so everything i do is long or i just murder things with filters like "glass" and "ocean ripple"
