Description The now-abandoned (and ripped-up) K&O line between Healy and LaCrosse, KS disappears into a thick winter fog.

Formerly of the Missouri Pacific, the line served rural towns and grain elevators for decades. It was absorbed by UP when the two railroads merged, and was shortly abandoned thereafter with the rise of long-haul trucking and the drop in wheat prices. It was then sold off by UP to Watco, who owns (among other roads) the Kansas & Oklahoma.

The right-of-way still exists, however all rails, ties, ballast, spikes, signals, and everything else have been removed and either scrapped or recycled for use elsewhere in the system.

Aye, thanks. Looked at your shot, and it can be tempting to try a concept like that, but it's best not to.

Nice pice great perspective and use of lines. I like the use of b+w especially i think it works very well here. Its great how the track goes off into the mist leading us into the unknown. nice piece

this is gorgeous, usually I'd say you need more tones, but somehow it works perfect for this one.

what a cracking shot...i'd love to see a wildly off-centre shot to compliment this one, too, but this is great.

factorone33 In reply to kidscruff [2005-11-21 23:01:23 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I do have one that could be considered off-center.

It's the same basic area and concept, just a different angle.

Oooh, the snow adds a lonesome feeling to it. It reminds us that trains aren't as common as they used to be
(Oh, and the atmospheric perspective is great!

Wow, I love this one..... it seems so desolate and endless, almost sad..... really beautiful! Seems very metaphorical!

The other end of the railway is one mysterious peice...who knows lies at the other end, who even knows if it ends at all.... This is one of thoes peices of art that provokes thought...I like this very much.

Thanks for the comments and the fav. This is probably one of the best shots I've ever taken with any camera, and it's by far the most popular deviation I have.

Liking this one a lot!! looks so surreal lik esomething from a dream. where does this railway lead to? whats behind the mist? it's like a glance into the future, we dont know what's out there, whats in store for us,truly makes me wonder about times that have yet to come, a beauty. keep it up and c ya around!!

Great atmosphere on this one
It's like a road to nowhere ( or better a railroad to nowhere) lost in the myst
The snowy background is fantastic and i love how the fields are lost in the myst, and the railroad seems endless

Yeah, I was driving home for Thanksgiving when I shot this part of the series, and the weather was dreary to be honest, but it was perfect for these kind of shots. This one's my favorite so far.

Kinda makes me imagine a scene...

You can hear the horns in the distance and the ground shaking, but you still can see anything, then out of nowhere, 6 locomotives and a 2 mile long frieght come thundering out of the fog...

Again, mind me

Awesome shot...

Beautiful shot. I love how all the lines head into the distance, even the poles running down the side of the track. It's a bit grainy but I'm guessing thats just the haze.

factorone33 In reply to megzy-boo [2005-01-24 09:43:43 +0000 UTC]

It's actually supposed to be a little blurry, but grainy, no. I might look into reducing that...

megzy-boo In reply to factorone33 [2005-01-24 09:47:52 +0000 UTC]

I thought it was maybe just the digital in the haze. Sorry
