Description Being the middle of UP territory, and surrounded by BNSF elsewhere, I don't get much other than those two, even when I travel. This was a pleasant surprise, and on my home turf no less.

Here, KCS AC4400CW #4579 and ES44AC #4688 lead a Department of Defense extra westbound down the Sharon Springs sub past MP 296 near Hays, Kansas.

Too bad the order of the locomotives wasn't reversed, but you can't have everything; very nice shot, either way. Reminds me of a DoD extra I saw on the Burlington just west of Chicago, although that one was much shorter.

Yeah, I kinda wished it was the other way around, but then again, it's gonna get to the point to where seeing the gray units will be a rarity, so I figure I'll take what I can get, considering I never see anything UP around these parts.

Kinda neat seeing those two paint shemes side by side, too.

It's a comparison of the norm versus the new.

Indeed. It makes me wonder if this was a one-time trackage rights agreement, or if the extra was just being pulled by KCS power on a UP contract...

Looks like a Fort Polk Military train. They always run maneuvers out in California several times a year and transport their stuff via rail, usually KCS Kansas City UP.

Business as usual more than likely

Great shot!

The clarity is so crisp it almost looks like HDR.

A tight aperture can do good things for contrast in high sunlight.

Tight and 1/1000th and still nice depth!

Thanks. I find depth of field is enhanced more by zoom than with aperture. They teach the opposite in photography classes, but in my experience, zoom is the ultimate modifier when it comes to depth of field.

How do you say zoom affects DoF?

And you should totally submit this photo to Trains Magazine.... seriously....

Zoom affects focus, and the focal vanishing point more often than not is changed long before the aperture is adjusted.

Aperture fine tunes your DoF, but zoom ultimately dictates it from the beginning, at least in my ideals.

I'll have to think about that. Maybe we can get some attention in the midwest for a change.

LOL! I have a link to submit to if you want it!

The only thing I have not mastered on my 5D is how to finely push my DoF in the direction I want it to go. I need to use my aperture value more than time value I guess...

Generally, I don't go above f/9 in broad daylight, especially with a zoom lens, and if I'm using a wide-angle, I keep it around 5.6-7.1 in order to keep the sky in check. Otherwise, I generally base it off the available lighting, and I'm even getting into the habit of using Aperture Priority Mode (Av on the dial), versus Shutter Priority (Tv). It keeps things leveled out at times.

Honestly, I was eying up the 1Ds Mark III, but the 5D Mark II has just as much to offer but for about a 1/3 of the cost of the Mark III. So I think I'm going with that for my first full-frame SLR. Plus it has HD video.
