***********************************************

With the scuffling twirl of rope and a horrifying, ponderous fluidity, Elina's pursuer scuttles into view behind her. The Scholar freezes, terror rising in heart and neck at the massive, spider-like form looming swiftly over her. A cry is stifled by the bitter bile in the back of her throat as the horror's features become apparent to her blurred vision; the many legs made of prehensile rope rhythmically propel the great, severed hand directly at her face.

***********************************************

Not the lightest image one might want as a partial Demon's Due tribute to what is likely my all-time favorite movie, but the quote to accompany it should aid the initiated who need a little nudge: "You've gotta be f*****g kidding..." Interestingly enough, I struggled getting this image to pop right in my head, mostly because as ever I wanted a composition that showed and drew the attention to the expression on Elina's face, but I couldn't get it to fly. Then I toyed around with the idea of using Elina's body to tell her side of the story and concentrate more on what was coming after her with the composition. Voila! I hope fans of the film can find something about the image and development worthy of approval, even though Elina probably would not utter Palmer's famous line.

I received this link in a note (thanks, Yg!) and I just gotta pass this bit of fandom beauty along (warning: gross special effects, movie spoilers, and a single instance of f*****g profanity): www.youtube.com/watch?v=8faq5a…

Elina was drawn using awesome references given me by the awesome stock model, Emily, at Feathered-pics . If you like what you see, please let her know. Thanks, Emily!

The reference image I relied on the most is not posted on Emily's gallery.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

This is soooo creepy. Spiders and disembodied hands together in the same image, without actual spiders. This is really well done! And creepy!!

I think we can all agree that it's nice that Gus had a hand in Elina's eventual capture.

"Game over, man!"

You certainly have a talent for defying expectations, I expected the severed hand in some form but that's certainly creepier than what I envisioned. I would imagine it's gotta rank pretty high on the list of things that Elina didn't want to see behind her, although given her experiences that list is likely pretty long at this point.  And Elina was courteous enough to back up so that the hand-spider thing could use the rope tripwire in the binding. You know, just in case it didn't bring enough to finish the job on it's own.

Speaking of rope, is the rope that Gus used in the tripwire the same rope from pages 47, 59 & 60 or has Chekov's Rope not yet fired?

"Game over."

Thank you for the compliments! I hoped to have this sequence done long before the Halloween season, but since we're here now, I guess "creepier" seems quite timely! Regarding the rope question, I'm thinking that this rope is one of the non-magical ones that the gremlin mob used in their ambushes in this room--like the one Valerin came up against in the beginning. I'm thinking the gremlins would have "re-set" the ambush area after her capture and never removed the trip-lines and fixed snares before Deirdre slaughtered the little monsters, so this trip-line is still here, and Gus knew about it.

Well, while the plan for the chapter always did have the Hellbinder's hand coming back into the game, I didn't come up with this play-by-play until late August of this year (two months ago, about the time that Elina was losing her dress to the magic spell). I think, by some of the comments on this page, that some people definitely saw through the little sound-effects distraction game going on behind her that enabled the gremlin's ambush to take Elina so completely, but the spider thing seems to have been mostly unforeseen at this point. Though I could be wrong.

My favorite part about that line, is that Palmer is the other one who has been taken over, and the thought that this could happen freaked HIM out.

WickedPrince In reply to faile35 [2014-10-25 06:09:41 +0000 UTC]

The look on his face in the next scene when his blood jumps out of the petri dish is also awesome. It's neat that there are so many things that we were left wondering without feeling like anything was done incorrectly. One of my friends and I would argue about whether we believed that every single cell was fully conscious. Or did it take a sufficient number of cells? How aware of itself was it? We had lots of questions about how Norris, who had been assimilated, could suffer a heart-attack. I assumed that it was simply because the organism just wasn't perfectly aware of how a human body should work, and didn't know how to repair things when Norris's heart gave out under all the stress. I still haven't seen the new prequel, so I'm curious if they answered any of the many questions, and how many new ones it opened up.

and my first thought wasn't the movie The Thing (awesome though that movie is)....instead, it reminded me of the skittering facehuggers from Aliens. And the hand is lunging at her face, so it could hand-gag her (pun intended) while the ropes quickly wrap around her...

Using the ropes as legs wasn't what I expected but I knew the hand would eventually come after her. I was thinking more of Thing from The Adams Family than 'The Thing', though. Now if his fingers had turned into giant spiderlegs then that would have been freaky.

"Yeah, f*ck you too!"

Heh, you pre-empted me with that Thing quote. And very clever, referencing both John Carpenter AND the Addams Family in one stroke! How creepy would it be if Thing, here, were to point at Elina, or give her a "come hither" gesture, or an "Oh no you don't" finger wag? Good god, sir, that'd be an image!

The vicious appendage moves around Elina and heads her off at the pass, or rather at the portal to the surface, wags a finger at her, and in the distance we hear Gus chiming in with "Nuh-uh-uh..." And, thank you!

Not likely. Even though her record is stellar amongst the Demon's Due females' final accounts, she's still fighting the odds. And those odds just got stacked more heavily against her.

Although Elina is looking 'fit to be tied' *wince* there is something a little funky about her right hand (fingers look a little shortened... but that's just being picky).
