***********************************************

The sounds of pursuit in the corridor behind her impel the Scholar toward the far end of the chamber and the exit to the surface. Her mind is yanked back and forth between her objective in sight, the scattered runes hidden about the room, and the whirling sound behind her that evokes a mental image of a lasso reaching toward her throat. An instant later Elina barely has time for startled bewilderment as a line is drawn up from its place of concealment in between the flagstones of the floor and held taut across her ankles. She squeals as the entire chamber tips alarmingly and the floor rushes up toward her.

***********************************************

Elina's legs were drawn using a reference provided by collared-by-faile Thanks, Sweetie!

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Well, at least it's better than a out-of-joint floorstone. Nothing's worse than both tripping and stubbing a toe at the same time...

Yes, that is worse, definitely. An exploding out-of-joint floorstone might even be a bit worse there--trip, stub a toe, the room blows up.

Okay, turning off the "smart-ass" setting now...

I *hate* that gremlin. It's a nice image, though, and a change from what you usually draw, in that we don't see her face. It is, however, easy to imagine what it looks like, which is part of what makes this image fun. Also, I liked your reference photo for Gus, there.

Well, we've seen her escape from cages, from murderous cat witches, from tight ropes, from another cage through a solid brick wall ... who knows what this scholar's capable of in the end! Β At this writing things look admittedly bleak, but she does still have her clothes (at least some of them) and she's not yet hindered by any ropes (which at any rate we already know she's escaped twice in the past.) Β Still ... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is the one!

My mind goes to odd places and I wonder what is behind that box that the rope is anchored to. Does Jervil have reels of rope just coiled in strategic locations throughout the cellar, just waiting to be unspooled for just such an occasion as crushing Scholarly type's escapes from the lair?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to chibipoe [2014-09-29 02:16:05 +0000 UTC]

Actually, this room was the site of Valerin's ambush, and it's rather on the frontier of the gremlins' former "territory," so that they tended to congregate here with capture-gear and so on. The rope was probably left here in that same location a couple of days after Valerin was taken in Rats in the Cellar, and left unused until now. Regarding the crate--I honestly don't know what's in it or how that rope is fixed to cause this. It'd have to be fairly solid, I'd think. Maybe a ring on the floor or wall, fixed in place with bolts and simply covered by a crate containing... uh... spare crockery made out of iron...?

Not counting my chickens, so to speak, but it would be somehow satisfying (and unexpected) if after all the spells, magical portals, fireballs, and enchanted rope-type objects that have been flying around the last thirty pages, a simple trip line would end up being the decisive element. Β

Knowing how much you love drawing gremlins, I still have to say nice job showing him braced and leaning back to create the tension on the line. Β Yes, I noticed that, though admittedly only after starting awhile at Elina's exceedingly lovely legs.

Gus rocks!

Thank you! I'm glad you are enjoying the accompanying narrative--I do some of them better than others, I think, but it's nice to know they sometimes help in selling the image/story. The first thing in my head when I saw this was the voice of Michael Palin in "A Fish Called Wanda", sitting on top of the steamroller, as he screams "Wevenge! Wevenge!! Wevenge!!!" Β Β I'm sure if Gus was capable of formulating complex phrases, he might be mouthing some similar sentiment, but as it stands, the intense gleam in his eye and the rather evil smirk on his face speak for themselves. Well done, small friend. Team Evil is in your debt! Β Β
Β Β
Β As attractive as I find Elina's legs (very!), and also recognizing the stylishness of her t-bar sandals, I must never the less state that it's past time that the straps around her ankles were a lot thicker, joined by a restrictive length of chain, and affixed in a permanent manner. Lets get on this, shall we? Β Β

Regarding the restraint, I just have to quote Raiders again: "I'm working on it, I'm working on it!" I love that line. The next page is a good one, and it's in the computer now awaiting digital work, so it should be up later today.

It's been a long time since I saw Fish Called Wanda. But the Michael Palin speech impediment brings to mind Palin's Pontius Pilate from Life of Brian, which had me rolling. "Wevenge!" indeed. Thanks for the compliments!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

faile35 In reply to TheeForsakenOne [2014-09-27 20:34:55 +0000 UTC]

It did a number on her, yes. From the beginning of her study time down here alone, she has known that it was likely she wouldn't be leaving free and on her own power, but having run the gauntlet of obstacles and challenges that she has encountered over the last 30 pages, she's now seeing the way out just a few steps ahead. It doesn't make her careless, but it changes the emotional landscape in which her Scholarly mind is working overtime to get her to freedom. Also, for us, viewers who have seen this trick played out many times over in ambush-sporting media we're familiar with, the trip-rope is old news, but Elina has spent much of her life in libraries and scriptoria, and thus isn't as expecting of it. Further, until a page or two from now, she believed the gremlin was behind her, trying to catch up and fling some kind of cocooning cord at her, so that her eyes were more peeled for the magical threat ahead of her than a gremlin trap. Also, the rope was concealed across the crack in the flagstones, so that unless she was looking for it or happened to see it (not likely when she's concentrating on other things), she'd be vulnerable.

But, hey, that's just my way of seeing it. It certainly doesn't have to satisfy anyone else who has a different impression. Regardless, thanks for the comment.
