For more information on the entire series, read the "'Demon's Due' Defined" journal entry here faile35.deviantart.com/journal… or the "'Demon's Due' Plus" journal entry here faile35.deviantart.com/journal… . Now that dA is forcing me to post thumbnails with the links, I'll probably have to rearrange these comments so they flow a little better...

***********************************************

Elina stumbles forward, leaning against the wall for support and breathing heavily. Step by labored step, the long corridor passes behind her in the shadows. Nearing another cluster of scattered runes, the Scholar pauses to consider the best path forward and feels the hackles on her neck rise at the sound of small, padded feet on the stone behind her. Dread catches the breath in her throat.

***********************************************

As always, Elina was drawn using references provided by Emily at Feathered-pics . Thanks, Emily! As per a commentator's suggestion/request, I intended to post a thumbnail of the stock photo I used from Emily's gallery for this one, but I don't think it's posted.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

And, if it's a black one, and it crosses her path, and she sees it again, it might mean they changed something...

I, too, am nervous about her using those walls for support, although given how tired she is, I don't suppose she has much choice. The curves on her torso here are just beautiful.

The idea that much-abused Gus, the last of the Wormloat Wonders, would seem to be about to obtain some payback fills my heart with a certain twisted gladness. As to its nature, it's unlikely that reciprocal assault with a book figures largely in his plans. I would instead draw your attention to a couple of accessories of Elina's whose loss could speed the much-delayed triumph of Team Evil. No, I'm not talking about her underthings, which I think it's safe to say are soon to be history. The key would be one target, although I don't think Elina has enough of a charge left to light a match. However, can you imagine her dismay if she were to suddenly find herself without the protection of those pesky glasses? Dazed, weakened, terrified, and now unable to protect herself from the sinister magical snares that surround her? Damn, that sound's good!

Of course, the fact that I'm getting so excited about  it probably means that some other interaction lies in store. As long as the little guy gets his licks in, though, it's all good.

I would suggest to Elina that she be careful where she leans. Any stone could be a trigger. Although I doubt there's another net hanging around, there are lots of other diabolical possibilities...

On a side note; I agree with Egoak, great job on her hair.

Thank you on all counts, particularly regarding her hair and for the insights into Team Evil's potential goals for the next encounter. I think that within another 6-7 pages much of that will be very clear, and my hope is to have it posted by the coming weekend.

Regarding Elina's potential dismay at the final events on deck for the completion of this chapter, I just need to say that Emily has given me a plethora of good photos to choose from for references--some with glasses and some without. All have expressions one would expect to see on a person's face when they have just been told that, unfortunately their car was just stolen and then was driven through the front room of their house, over the top of their pet, and into their den where it just happened to clip the power cord and shut off their computer which was almost but not quite finished installing Windows updates...

Actually, I'm afraid that if I were to comment more seriously about the wonderful ideas you've suggested here, it might have to include a "Spoilers Ahead" warning, and I'd just as soon get the actual pages up here.

But thanks again, and to Erick288 for a fun conversation to read.

Nooooo!   Not the glasses!  I love the glasses!  Though I agree, it would certainly be a heartwarming, feel-good ending if Gus were to get some sort of justice.   I sort of can't believe I just wrote that but ... well it's what I'm hoping for so I guess I'll just have to go with it.

I hear what you're saying! Elina's glasses are a big part of how we see her and how she sees herself (and how she sees, period).

If Gus has any sort of memory though, he will remember that, back when Elina was in her cage and both the key and her glasses were on the floor outside it, she passed over the key to retrieve her specs. Even if he doesn't get how powerful they are, I think he might go after them just because they are important to her. If he can overcome whatever magic stick-in-place spell holds them on and make off with them, he will have gotten more than his revenge. He will have robbed her of her last defense, and rendered her as helpless as only someone with really poor vision can be without their "windows on the world". I used to have very bad eyesight, and I know the feeling well. It's a real Achilles heel.

The fact is, even if Gus doesn't go for them, you know Helly will. Once he's got her he's going to be out to break her, and the place to start is by stripping away anything that gives her strength and reinforces who she is, or was. Glasses, key, clothing. The works.

I also totally agree about Gus. He's a true survivor, the last of his breed. He's seen all his litter-mates ripped apart, he's been possessed by what to him was a god-like intelligence, only to have it smashed out of him with brute force, he's been caged, interrogated, and terrified out of his mind but, like a real trouper, he just hoisted up his diapers and carried on (before you say anything, I know how creepy that sounds!) Perhaps lovable isn't exactly the right adjective to describe him, but admirable, for sure! My perspective may be somewhat skewed, though...

There is definitely a need for some good, old-fashioned gloating from Gus, at some point.  But I tend to think along with you ... I'm not sure Gus will have picked up on the subtlety of the glasses (I hope he hasn't) but I do definitely know the Hellbinder has, and will address them.  It'll just take me a bit to get used to Elina without them!   I still do wear glasses/contacts, so that could perhaps be another reason I tend to feel bad for her losing them.  (And yet at the same time I'm considerably less stricken with sympathy with regards to her clothing ... go figure.)

I admit that I still don't know precisely what it is that the Hellbinder intends doing with his prize, since the mirror is no longer in play, but I can definitely understand why wondering the same thing must be causing no small amount of worry in Elina's mind.

Well, in the stock photo, those "small, padded feet" were actually at a running galop and accompanied by an extensive warbling motor-like trill as the cat demanded both attention and to be in the middle of everything going on... hence the dread actually being weary dismay (I just petted and scratched under your chin five minutes ago! How much more do you *need*?)...

Those pesky, greedy felines! So, I'm curious how this pet gets along with the other, larger, more herpetological one.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

White-Feather In reply to faile35 [2014-09-24 11:21:24 +0000 UTC]

They never interact. I don't allow the cat in my room most of the time because I don't want to deal with clawed furniture or excess cat hair on my blankets or floor- at least the snake's shedding is in easily removed pieces that stay in the cage instead of floating on the air... nor do I really want to have to bring either in to a vet because of an encounter gone wrong...

Ah. Thanks for the insight and explanation. Your pet management is sounding rather like international diplomacy. "Good representatives of Namuria and Beletriz, I'm certain we can work out this misunderstanding to a mutually accommodating treaty. After all, I am the proud owner/servant of both a domestic feline and a boa constrictor, and you understand how delicate such a relationship can be..."

"Small, padded feet."   I guess this rules out both Luther and Uncle Creepy.  You don't suppose Gus would hold a grudge over the whole book-thumping incident, do you?  Anyway, this is another great image which I presume we owe at least in part to Emily but take some credit yourself too ... really nice work!

Thank you! I will take some credit--I drew most of the torso, arms, and hands right out of my head. The face is all Emily, though. And Gus isn't one for grudges, really. In the gremlin world, they tend to get a little guy killed. He's more of an opportunist at heart.
