Description For more information on the entire series, read the "'Demon's Due' Defined" journal entry here faile35.deviantart.com/journal… or the "'Demon's Due' Plus" journal entry here faile35.deviantart.com/journal… . Now that dA is forcing me to post thumbnails with the links, I'll probably have to rearrange these comments so they flow a little better...

***********************************************

Reaching the doorway, the Scholar pauses to evaluate her pursuer's progress. Though the corridor behind her is still bathed in darkness, the scrambling footsteps are undoubtedly closer. Even worse, Elina detects the hollow whirl and subtle rasping of a length of rope being thrown and dragged over the stone. "I should have immolated the little fiend when I had the chance," she breathes, the fear in her heart denying her a grip on any sense of outrage against the gremlin. Her Scholarly mind doubts that the creature would have had time to round up a magical rope and haul it back on her heels in the few minutes since it fled through the key's portal, but no part of her wishes to find out.

"Time to run," she says aloud, testing the strength of her legs and surging through the door.

***********************************************

As always, Elina was drawn using references provided by Emily at Feathered-pics . Thanks, Emily! The reference for this one was not posted, either.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

I don't know what it is, but something about how you've done the corridor makes it look almost holographic.Β  It gives the illusion that either the walls are elongating (always a possibility in a magical labyrinth) or that when Elina says it's time to run, she moves like the Flash.

Sounds like one of my all-time favorite scenes from Big Bang Theory. I think it's the lengths of the bricks. They probably should be shrinking length-wise a bit faster than I have drawn them. But if it adds to the "I'm freaked out, exhausted, and disoriented" notion for the poor girl, maybe it's better like it is. Thank you!

I can't quite think of anything that I could say that wouldn't be considered a spoiler at this point. Elina is beautiful, as always. Carry on!

Note: Before charging through the door, check first to make sure there's nothing/no one hiding on the other side or above waiting to spring an ambush... using a decoy like a tossed bit of rubble or a shoe might help. Or just knock and wait for the "two bits" answer....

repeating that feeling that she's gonna run into something...it's the classic horror movie trap: look for the sounds, turn back around and there it is, staring you in the face.

It's a good trap for more than just horror movies, though they make very good use of it. The potential validation of your feeling/suspicion is about to be posted.

She's probably right about fireballing Gus when she had the chance - but I do like the sense of panic here and, while she's had a good run, I can't help but think that Elina's running is nearly done.

Certainly we can hope. As John Malkovich said, "[hope is] what we cling to when reality has left us with nothing else..." Yeah, I guess that's not really applicable here, but the SNL monologue it came from was pretty witty. Oh well. Regardless, the reality that we can cling to in lieu of hope is about to be posted on Page204...

Ah, yes, but you see, there just happens to be a nice little pile of that very thing lying just a few yards back, and whether it's free and in Gus's hands, or attached to Von Hellthing, or remotely controlled by Helly, it's still magical rope. From the sounds that are coming from behind you, there would appear to be a real possibility that Gus and Von Hellthing may have pooled their resources, in which case full steam ahead would seem to be the only viable option. I mean, how much further into trouble could charging blindly down a sorcerously booby-trapped corridor towards the illusion of friendly light get you...?

Lets find out, shall we?
