***********************************************

The gremlin utters a growling heave and vaults over the back of Elina's head, tightly clutching the length of the Scholar's necklace as it lands before her and scurries beyond her grasp. "Wai-...no!" she cries as the key rings across the flagstones and disappears in the shadows. Sounds of the gremlin's retreat and the pursuit closing behind her leave her whirling in blurred confusion.

***********************************************

Elina was drawn using awesome references given me by the awesome stock model, Emily, at Feathered-pics . If you like what you see, please let her know. Thanks, Emily!

This is the most heavily consulted image I used.

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

I love the perspective on this, Jeff

And there goes the necklace, which Jeff is tired of drawing and is glad to see the back of. And poor Elina--to exhausted to even be properly outraged. Her expression here is fantastic.

It's true. That necklace has been around so much, it deserves its own entry in the "'Demon's Due' Defined" journal entry with character development statistics... Thanks!

Β On that very topic, I was thinking that it might be a good idea for Helly to relieve Gus of that particular piece of jewelry in the not too distant future. After all, Gus was around when Elina used the key's power to amplify the "Magnivolumin Pyromortis" curse, and if he gets it in his head to repeat that, or any other of the things he's undoubtedly heard, while clutching the key, there could be some unexpected complications... Another good insight. Also, it brings to mind another possibility: Years after the Demon's Due storyline is complete, Gus stars in his own story in which he plays the wizard who wanders the lands, magic and mysticism his to command, going by the name of Gandalf Gremlin...

It's like the breakaway play for the touchdown, the guy is running for the endzone, the field is clear before him, and...

...somebody stretched a tripwire across the 15 yard line.

One of those M. Night Shyamalan movies that everybody loves to hate: The Lady in the Water, has a scene with a movie critic facing down the monster while down in the laundry room and wondering to himself if he's in a real horror movie, or a comedy horror movie, because if it's the former he'll get dragged down just before he reaches the door, and if the latter, there will be a series of slips and spills to make people laugh through the tension and he'll get to slam the door in the monsters face. He spends several seconds contemplating this before he decides maybe he should start running.

Thank you! Yes, as others have pointed out, Elina didn't brain the little bastard when she had the chance, and it has come back to trip her up, literally. But, there's still enough story left for your encouragement to prove worthwhile!

And, for some strange reason, your comment got triply posted. So, thank you! (x3)

Yes, as others have pointed out, because "good" is merciful and reserved, "evil" gets a break and doesn't return the favor. It is indeed a moral dilemma that Elina may even be now reconsidering.

grassa48 In reply to faile35 [2014-10-20 16:09:19 +0000 UTC]

Joking aside. I have long believed that the person who shows mercy to the wicked is as equally guilty of any wrongs the wicked one commits later as is the wicked one.

Β  This is just ridiculously good! Many commenters here, myself amongst them, have remarked on your exceptional ability to render faces and the nuances of the expressions they wear, and this is as good an example as I've seen you create. We can read the complex mix of sensations and emotions she's feeling as if they were written out in plain language: fear, numbness, aching pain, exhaustion, disbelief, and the beginnings of soul-crushing despair at the realization that her race is run, and that there'll be no more escapes for her. You can see so much in the vague, half-hearted, futile grasp she makes for the key as it disappears from her sight. It's all over now, baby blue.Β Β

Β  I know I've said it before, but I have to repeat how glad I am that we are getting this run of images of Elina without her glasses. She really is a knockout when you can see all of her features without the interruption and distortion that glasses, especially strong ones, inevitably create. Now I 'm pretty sure that, unless Helly has a benefits package for his captives that includes laser surgery, glasses of some kind will reappear on her face at some point, so I'm savouring each image as it appears, and as always, a huge vote of thanks to Emily, for giving you such inspirational material to work from. While I'm at, can we once again have an amen for her hair? AMEN!! Β Β

Β  Gus, Gus, my man (or whatever!), this is your moment! Revenge is sweet, is it not, O miniscule minion of Team Evil? From the extremely smug and self-satisfied expression on your little mug, I would say that that is exactly what you are thinking at this moment. The last time I saw an expression of this king of satisfaction, it was on Gollum's face just after he reclaimed his Precious from that nasty Baggins. Of course, we all know how that ended, so I'm gonna push for a different outcome. If this is the last part Gus plays, I'd like to think of him skipping down the corridor humming and giggling to himself, calling out"Where's your book, now?" every so often, until he disappears into the darkness. Well played, Wormloat Warrior! Β Β

Β  Oh and as far as the ever receding event horizon of ten more pages to go that was mentioned in the comments on BB 208 is concerned, if you continue to put out drawings of this caliber, please, don't stop on my account. This really is as good as it gets! Β Β

Thank you for these compliments and insights! If I don't keep up on them, I miss some great kudos like this! Given that I've posted the next five pages after this one already, we know she doesn't get her glasses for at least that long, and possibly longer, although there are two of those pages that don't show her face. But, as usual, I can't stress enough how candid and well-expressed Emily's reference material has been, so that I have but to peruse my "Emily" folder and images pop for the next page or two (or six, if I'm not careful...).

In any case, given the length of this chapter (soon to be broken into two), I am now down to simply illustrating the next page in sequence and will continue to do so until I complete the final pencil on one and say, "That's it, Bookbinding is finished." Until that happens, I am just ducking my head and concentrating on the task at hand.

Regarding Gus, I have a few ideas for how he might show up later, but I will say no more on that issue for fear of expanding things or spoiling them or both...

Regardless, thanks again. I'm glad you are enjoying it.
